Q: What pitcher surrendered Ken Holtzman's only World Series
home run?
A: Andy Messersmith. On Oct. I6, I974, in the third inning of the
fourth game, Holtzman hit a solo home run. Holtzman, with
relief help from Rollie Fingers, was the winning pitcher. The
Oakland Athletics defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, at the
Oakland Coliseum, 5-2. In view of the American League’s use of
the designated hitter, Holtzman, who had two hits in this series,
did not bat during the regular season
Q: In 1966, Sandy Koufax' 27th wm, on the last day of the season,
clinched the pennant for the Dodgers. Who was the losing
pitcher of this game?
A: Jim Bunning. On Oct. 2, 1966, in the second game of a double-
header, Koufax struck out 10 batters and yielded seven hits, in
winning his last major league game. The Los Angeles Dodgers
defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, at Connie Mack Stadium, 6-
3.
Q: In 1944, who caught Robert Katz in his major league debut?
A: Ray Mueller. On May 12. 1944, the Reds’ relief pitcher retired
the side in order in the eighth inning. He then left the game for a
pinch-hitter. Harry Feldman, pitching in relief, hurled 6 2/3
innings in winning his second game of the season. The New
York Giant* defeated the Cincinnati Reds, at Crosley Field, 5-3.
Ed Huesser, the 1944 National League ERA leader, was the
losing pitcher. Katz appeared in six games and lost his only
decision.

Mayor’s signature draws
criticism from community
Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young
drew considerable criticism this
week after signing an open letter
advertisement in the New York
Times asking “Must Beirut be
destroyed?" and comparing it to
Dresden, Warsaw and Hiroshima.
In quick response, the letter at
right was delivered to Mayor
Young by the Atlanta Jewish
Federation.
The following statement was
issued by Israeli Consul General
Yehoshua Trigor:
"I am surprised that the ad
‘Must Beirut Be Destroyed?’
appeared in the New York Times
and not in west Beirut, because it is
the PLO that holds the civilians of
Beirut hostage in the largest hi
jacking in the history of mankind.
“Those who impose themselves,
together with the Syrians, in the
territory which used to be a free
and independent Lebanon, and
have caused during six years of
their reign, destruction of cities
and death in thousands of
Lebanese civilians, are the ones to
whom this question should be
addressed.
“So those who put the ad in the
New York Times are actually
barking up the wrong tree. It is a
pity they missed, in the same
newspaper in which the' infamous
ad appeard, a whole page
headlined ‘People in Lebanon Tell
of the Terror of Six Years Living
Under the PLO.’
“If they had to read this page they
would have known the destruction
in Sidon, Tyre, Nabatiya and other
parts of Lebanon was caused
during the civil war in which the
Syrians and PLO actively
participated, long before Israel
undertook its defensive action in
Lebanon.
“I am thus disappointed that
Mayor Andrew Young, for whom
I have respect, should have lent his

Dear Mayor Young:
It is in sorrow and disappointment that we write to you
regarding your recent statements on Lebanon.
Mayor Young, you signed an ad asking, “Must Beirut be
destroyed?” The answer is NO. But perpetuating the lies and myths
of PLO propaganda will not save Beirut or Lebanon. Ridding the
hi-jacked city of Beirut of the 6,000 PLO terrorists who today hold
500,000 Lebanese hostages will free that beleaguered city.
Insidious comparisons equating Dresden, Warsaw and
Hiroshima with Beirut serve no purpose other than to incide hatred
of Israel.
Mayor Young, Sidon, Tyre and Nabateih are not in ruins. They
are, in fact, returning to the normalcy they have not known during
seven years of PLO terrorist occupation.
It is true that thousands of lives have been lost—indeed 100,000
Lebanese, Palestinians and Israelis have died as a result of PLO
and Syrian carnage, financed and armed by the Soviet Union.
We ask you. Mayor Young—where was your “humanitarian
concern” when:
— 100,000 were being slaughtered by PLO and Syrian forces?
—PLO terrorists attacked civilians at Munich, Kiryat
Shemona, Safed, Ma’alot, Paris, the Haifa Road and countless
other places?
—Syria murdered 15,000 of its own citizens in the city of
Hamah?
Why, Mayor Young, do you have a selective double standard
on “moral issues”? Why condemn Israel for defending its citizens
and ignore the PLO terrorists who commit murder and mayem the
world over?
You asked—“Will the world stand by indifferently in the face of
this peril?”
We hope and pray that as Israel and America have not, neither
will the world allow terrorism to rule.

name to the statement ‘Must
Beirut Be Destroyed,’ which is
obviously based on misconoeptions
and misinterpretations. Most of
the signatories are known as
opponents of Israel, and I would
like to think that Mayor Young is
not one of them.
“This is the reason I will refrain
from commenting on the
incredulous comparison between
Israel’s defensive measures in
Lebanon and the Holocaust.
Israel will do what it has to do,
preferably without additional
fighting."
