DeKalb County Commissioner Liane Levetan discusses the

how to develop effective advocacy skills.
Henry A. Kissinger talks with Avital Scharansky, wife of the
imprisoned Soviet Jewish dissident, about the plight of her
husband. The meeting took place Just before the Stephen Wise
Awards dinner of American Jewish Congress held recently. At
center is Howard M. Squadron, president of AJCongress, who
received a Stephen Wise award for leadership. Dr. Kissinger was
principal speaker at the dinner.

Dr. Scott Abramson has been
chosen as the outstanding
physician for 1982 by the Kaiser
Permante Group of Hayward.
Calif. Dr Abramson is the son of
Esther and George Abramson of
Atlanta. He lives with his wife, the
former Pamela Higham of
Manchester, England, in
Alameda, Calif.

Dr Jerome Kruger, also a $3,000
award winner, received the Samuel
Wesley Stratton Award, first
presented in 1962. It recognizes an
unusually significant research
contribution to science or
engineering. Kruger's work has
provided a strong scientific basis
for improving methods of testing
and controlling corrosion He has
given many talks around the
United States and world on
corrosion research and is the
author of numerous publications
on this topic.
Kruger resides in Rockville.
Md , with his wife. Mollie, and
their two sons, Leonard and
Joseph. Dr. Kruger is the son of
Mrs. Sarah Kruger of Atlanta and
the late Isaac Kruger
Dr. Ronald E. Goldstein was
honored with the President’s
Award by the Northern District
Dental Society at its award's
banquet Nov. 20. Dr.
Goldstein received the award
for his assisting of dentistry by
his appearances on the local
“PM Magazine."
Dr. Goldstein has produced
over 70 programs on many
phases of dental care in
cooperation with the Northside
District Dental Society.
Judge Robert Berdon of New
Haven Conn., formerly the
treasurer for the state of
Connecticut, has been chosen as
the outstanding trial judge of the
United States by the National
Association of Trial Lawyers.
Judge Berdon is a cousin of
Esther and George Abramson of
Atlanta.

Sam Kaplan has been
appointed regional director of
B’nai B’rith District Five.
Based in Atlanta. Kaplan will
be responsible for servicing the
lodges in Georgia, South
Carolina. North Carolina and
parts of Virginia.
He comes to B’nai B’rith with
a background in business,
public affairs and community
involvement. His experience
dates back to involvement in
the B’nai B’rith Youth
Organization while in high
school and in Hillel while in
college. He is currently a
member of Dan Lodge in
Charleston and will affiliate
with the Achim Lodge in
Atlanta.
Before joining B’nai B’rith,
Kaplan was a management
consultant with Fortune
Personnel of Raleigh. Prior to
that, he spent several years in
Washington as State Legislative
Coordinator with the American
Association of Equipment
Lessors and as a Congressional
aide. Also while in Washington.
he served as a consultant to the
National Academy of Public
Administration and U.S.
Department of Housing and
Urban Development.
A native of Charleston, S.C.,
Kaplan is the son of Mrs. Ruth
Kaplan. He holds a B.A. degree
in international studies from
the University of South
Carolina and has completed
graduate work in public affairs
at the American University in
Washington.
Stanley L. Daniels FAIA is the
recipient of the 1982 Ivan Allen
Senior Award, the most
prestigious award presented
annually by the Atlanta Chapter,
American Institute of Architects.
The award cites Daniels lot his
“service to the community through
his leadership on the Greater
Atlanta Arts Council, the
Midtown Civic Association, the
Housing Appeals Board, the
Atlanta Chamber of Commerce
and through the initiation of
Archifest as a major program of
increasing public awareness of the
built environment.”
Eva L. Goss has joined the
public relations firm of
Fleishman, Chatham & DiRico
as an account executive. She
was formerly the noon news
producer at WXIA-TV.
She began her broadcasting
career in 1972 at WSB-TV in
Atlanta and was also a
television news producer in
Detroit, San Francisco and St.
Louis before returning to
Atlanta in June of 1981.
Earlier in her career, she was
a consultant for the Saturday
edition of the Atlanta
Constitution. She also served as
an editor for TV GUIDE in
Atlanta and was editor of a
local fashion trade publication
for one year.
Ms. Goss graduated from
Briarcliff High School, and
attended the University of
Georgia. She is the daughter of
Eddie and Millie Goss of
Dunwoody and currently lives
in Smyrna.
Shelly Zahava Ettinger,
daughter of Rabbi and Mrs. Zvi
Ettinger of Dalton, Ga., was
named to “Who’s Who” last year.
Ms. Ettinger, a senior at Touro
College majoring in management/
computer science is a 1979
graduate of Yeshiva High School
in Atlanta. At Touro she was
president of the student
government. Women’s Division, in
her junior year. She is presently
editor ofthe 1983 Yearbook for the
College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences.

Phillip and Debra Rich of
Lawrenceville announce the birth
of a son, Reuben Aron “Bubba”
Rich, on Sept. 21. Grandparents
are Dorothy and David Rotter and
Betty and Sidney Rich, all of
Atlanta. Great-grandparents are
Mrs. Pauline Zimmerman and the
late Reuben Zimmerman of
Atlanta, the late Harry and Dora
Rotter of New York, the late
Goldie and Michael Spitzer of
Milwaukee, and the late Philip and
Edith Rich of Milwaukee.
The bris was performed by
Cantor Akiva Ostrovsky.

Anna Rill of Montreal, Canada.

Hebrew name Reuven Zachariah.
Larry and Cookie Beiser of Los
Angeles announce the birth of a
son, Ryan Eric, on Dec. 3.

Mark Rothstein, son of Irene
and Herman Rothstein, a physical
education instructor and coach at
Woodward Academy in College
Park, captured first place in the
139 pound and under division in
the International Physathlon
sponsored by the American Lung
Association of Tennessee recently.
The “physathlon" was a day
long event made up of tests of
speed, endurance and strength.
Each competitor participated in 18
events, including a mile swim, 10-
mile run, 30 minute stationary
bicycle ride, chinups, pushups,
situps and 12 weight lifting events.
Rothstein grew up in DeKalb
County and graduated from
Briarcliff High School. He taught
in Breman, Ga., before joining the
faculty at Woodward.
