Israel ranks No. 6 among
world’s ‘important forces’
by Joseph PolakofT
TSr» Washing!oo correspondent
WASHINGTON—Secretary of
State George Shultz has. been
advised that Americans rate Israel
sixth (44 percent) among “the most
important forces" in the world,
ahead of West European states and
behind the United States itself (93
percent), Russia (79), China (52),
Saudi Arabia (also 52) and Japan
(50)
A memorandum from a close
aide to Shultz dated Jan. 20, the
week before the secretary began his
Far Eastern tour, said that West
Germany traded Israel with 31
percent. Great Britain, 25, Mexico
20, Canada, 17, and France 12, in
that order. A copy of the memo
was made available to this
reporter.
These were results in a Roper
poll last March, the memo to
Shultz said. Another Roper poll in
June, he was informed, showed
Israel was rated by one in five
Americans (20 percent) as a “close
ally” of the U.S., two in five (40
percent) said Israel is “a friend"
and one in five “neutral." One in 14
respondents (seven percent)
regarded Israel as “unfriendly.”
In the June poll, comparatively,
Great Britain led the “close ally"
list with 58 percent and Canada
was in second place with 41
percent. Israel had 20 percent.
West Germany, 16, Japan, also 16,
France, 10, Mexico, six, Saudi
Arabia, four, China, three, and the
Soviet Union, one, in that order.
The June poll rated Israel and
Mexico tied (each 40 percent) as a
“friend” of the U.S., both higher
than Great Britain with 27 percent.
Japan led with 48 percent. Others
were France, 44, West Germany,
43, Canada, 42, Saudi Arabia, 23,
China, 21, Soviet Union, three.
Seven percent regarded Israel as
“unfriendly” and one percent
considered’ it as an “enemy,” the
same as Britain, France and
Mexico. In the “unfriendly”
category, Israel ranked fifth
lowest. One percent rated Britain
and Canada as “unfriendly."
Japan had five percent, West
Germany, six, and France, eight
percent.
Haig addresses ADL group;
praises Israel’s democracy
PALM BEACH, Fla. (JTA)—
Former Secretary of State
Alexander Haig praised Israel’s
democratic form of government
and declared that the United States
should not interfere in the internal
affairs of the country.
Referring to the Israeli inquiry
commission report that led to the
resignation of Israeli Defense
Minister Ariel Sharon, Haig told a
meeting here of the Anti-
Datamation I —m at B'ui B'nlii
that “We have learned a lesson—
Israel is indeed a democracy." He
added:
“That means Americans and
even members of the American
diaspora (the U.S. Jewish
community) have no right to
comment on the internal affairs
of the State of Israel.
The former administration
official also told a dinner opening
the ADL’s national executive
committee at the Breakers Hotel
last Thursday night that ( the
United States “must insist on the
withdrawal of all foreign forces
from Lebanon—not just Israeli
forces."
Honored at the dinner was New
Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg,
who received the ADL’s Haym
Salomon Award for his
contributions to “his state and
nation and his sense of
f f
Haig
responsibility for the rights and
privileges of his fellow men.”
In his comments on the current
situation, Haig said that what
happens in Israel “must be a
reflection of the choice of the
people of Israel in the exercise of
their franchise. Why is this so?” he
went on. “Because,” he declared, in
the process of criticizing from
abroad, “we deprive the
opposition in Israel of its
platform."
Calling for a “spirit of
partnership and cooperation” with
Israel, the former secretary of state
said, “Some-say our obligation to
Israel is purely moral." But, he
went on, Israel represents "geo
political and strategic values to the
United States—a country with a
stable regime, militarily capable
and of crucial importance to the
United States in the region.”
The dinner meeting marked the
beginning of ADL’s observance of
its 70th anniversary during 1983.

through ex-uterine fertilization had been males. Of the total
