The “Rehov Sumsum” set has
been built as “Any-Street" in
“Any-Town,” Israel, with typical
houses and architectural styles
surrounded by a park, a
playground, and real street signs.
It is peopled with a diverse
selection of characters: Natan, a
typical young Sabra; Yona. a
motherly Yemenite woman;
Shosh, an attractive girl of
Moroccan origin; Albert, a new
immigrant learning Hebrew in
ulpan; and Rassan, an Arab
student.
Ben Shaul explains the
combination by stating the central
message the program hopes to get
across: that there is great diversity
of cultures, habits, languages, and
opinions in Israel -and yet all can
and do exist together on one street.
In addition, just as Big Bird is
one of the residents of Sesame
Street, so is Rehov Sumsum home
for Kippi Ben Kippod. The giant
hedgehog was designed by Israeli
Avner Katz and built in the New
York studio of Bobby Harrison,
creator of Miss Piggy. For the
present, Kippi is the only Israeli
puppet; but the imaginative minds
at IETV are already creating the
Teaching is her goal
When Jeannie Sekulow taught a
sixth grade class in the Sunday
school at The Temple, she says she
discovered that “nothing is more
important than teaching., after all,
the children are the future.”
This fall, Ms. Sekulow began
working toward a master of
science degree in Jewish education
at Yeshiva University in New York
City. She is studying at the
university's David J. Azrieli
Institute of Jewish Education and
Administration.
After completion of her studies,
she says her plans include
returning to Atlanta to teach in a
Jewish day school.'
Judaic sliidjes
and psychology at Emory
University, where she said she
found out that “the more 1 learned
about Judaism, the more I wanted
to teach.”
The 21-year-old has lived in
Atlanta forthe past 12 years. She is
the daughter of Stan and Natalie
Sekulow. A graduate of Lakeside
High School, Ms. Sekulow has
worked as a youth counselor at the
AJCC day camp and as assistant
art director at Camp Barney
Medintz.
Although she has just begun her
studies, she says she is already
impressed. “The professors are
fantastic., they are so knowledgeable.”
The programs in the David J.
Azrieli Institute lead to master of
science and doctor of education
degrees, as well as a specialist's
certificate in Jewish education.
They are designed to train students,
witn advanced knowledge in
Jewish studies as teachers and to
prepare teachers to become
principals and administrators in
Jewish day and high school.

parallel planning is underway for
using “Rehov Sumsum” in the
United States as a vehicle for
teaching Hebrew as a second

American children a view of life in
Israel Jewish educators are
presently working to define the
goals for a “Rehov Sumsum"
readaptation to its target U.S.
audience. In the meantime,
program guides in Hebrew and
English are being written for use in
school and at home.
If there is any question of the
program’s popularity after only a
few months on the air, it is put to
rest by the anecdotes Ben Shaul
relates. Among them are one
teacher's complaint that the show
sparks so many new ideas in her
head that she can’t possibly do
them all. and another’s that her
class refuses to take naps for fear of
oversleeping and missing the day’s
broadcast.
Then there was the call that
came in to the IETV switchboard,
with a child’s voice asking, “Which
bus do I take to get to Rehov
Sumsum?"
