I Emory students gather to hear Yosef Yankelev. Emory students celebrate Hanuka for Jews in Russia On the eve of Hanuka this year, students at Emory University gathered to usher in the Festival of Freedom. Through Hillel. the Emory Soviet Jewry Committee made Hanuka more than a memory of freedom—it was a living festival of freedom. Two menorahs were lit. A blue and white menorah, the colors of Jewish liberation, was lit to fulfill the commandment of Hanuka. A second one, draped in black, denotingtte color of grief and rfhgfflflirwlli’ "m "dn "Whal f of all Jews everywhere, but especially in Russia, who could not celebrate Hanuka. During the evening, a phone call was madetoCapt. Micha Edelman in Israel. Edelman had been in both the Soviet merchant marines and navy. He had been a refusnik for seven years until his release five years ago. Although it was 2 a.m. in Israel, he spoke to the group gathered in the lobby of the Emory Student Unidt*. building. He told the students that letters to Jews in Russia do help. “Don’t stop writing.” he said. “Marches and demonstrations and lobbying in Congress do help. Keep up the pressure. Be strong," he told the crowd. “Be proud that you are a Jew." Violinist Yosef Yankelev, a member of the Emory music faculty, performed for the group. An accomplished concert violinist and a former Soviet Jew, Yankelev recounted the stories of his own experience. He recalled how, when he was a child in the Soviet Union, his father urged him to succeed, do well in school, and not to be timid. He did as his father had told him and was beaten up for being a Jew who succeeded as he had been for being timid. This is the bind of the Soviet Union. Finally, with everyone standing, holding candles, the eight-foot menorahs were lit. Voices rose together in the blessing and Ma'oz Tzur. As the people left, there was hope that yet another group of Jews now understands the plight of their brothers and sisters in Russia a little better; that the struggle for freedom had been increased just a bit; that Hanuka was being celebrated not for the materialism of December, but for its true meaning—to use the memory of past glories to strengthen the resolve of the Jewish people to keep Jewish destiny in Jewish hands.
