Reagan lights menorah at Maryland center
by Joseph Polakoff
TSl’i Washington correspondent
WASHINGTON - President
Reagan entered Jewish history on
the fifth day of Hanuka in the year
5744. By lighting the first of the
candles at a ceremony at the
Jewish Community Center of
Greater Washington, he became
the first president to go to a Jewish
establishment and to participate
in the symbolic lighting of the
Hanuka menorah commemorating
the victory of the Maccabees over
Syrians 175 years before the
common era.
His 20-minute appearance yvas
before a limited audience of 260
men, women and children—some
babes in arms—specially selected
by center officials to represent the
13,000 members and families
associated with the center, which is
part of a large complex of Hebrew
schools, communal services and
recreation facilities in Rockville,
Md., in the heart of a
predominantly Jewish district of
suburban Maryland.
The president and his party
made the 13-mile trip from the
White House in two helicopters
that landed on the center's soccer
field behind the building housing
the center’s 300-seat auditorium.
More than 2,000 persons were in
the center, most of them there for
the usual programs on a Sunday
during the festival of lights when
the ceremony took place. A
television hook-up enabled them
to see the ceremony in the building.
Some persons came early in the
morning, hoping to get a place in
the auditorium, but only those
with special tickets were permitted
to enter.
The president drew four bursts
of applause and three standing
ovations for what he said and did.
The ovations came when he first
appeared, when he made his first
departure and when he quickly,
returned to shake hands with each
of the 19 boys and girls clad in blue
and white who comprised the choir
that sang of peace, courage and the
heroism of the Maccabees, in
Hebrew, Yiddish and English.
“The nicest thing,” said a gray
haired woman speaking with a
Yiddish accent, “was his thank you
to the children.”
The president drew applause
when he said, “The bonds between

our two people (Americans and
Israelis) are growing stronger and
they must not and will never be
broken.” He also was applauded
when he spoke of Jeane
Kirkpatrick, the U.S. ambassador
to the United Nations, as “our
watchdog” in “making sure Israel
is not hurt in the United Nations.”
The most prolonged applause for
his remarks followed, when he
added “but just so no one gets any
ideas, let me be blunt; if Israelis
ever forced to leave the U.N., the
United States and Israel will leave
together."
Applause for the president also
came when he spoke about Soviet
Jewry and Jews who have fled
oppression and “are in America
taking their first steps toward
becoming American citizens.” He
said, “On behalf of more than 200
million Americans, may 1 say to
you, welcome to your new family.”
A general impression among
those attending and others asked
about the president’s participation
was that it was motivated by the
1984 national election campaign.
“He said the right things in the
right place," one observer typically
remarked after noting Jewish
voters here are mainly liberal
Democrats.
Stuart Eisenstat, President
Carter’s assistant for domestic
affairs and policy, who attended
the ceremony with his wife and two
young sons, in an interview by The
Southern Israelite, recalled that
Carter symbolically lighted the
Lubavitchers giant candelabra
that glows electrically every
Hanuka in Lafayette Park
opposite the White House. “It is
wonderful for President Reagan to
participate” in a Hanuka
ceremony, Eisenstat said. “One
ought not read ulterior motives
into it. In our Democratic
country, the president recognizes
the importance of the Jewish
community and the pluralism in
our society. Hanuka is a legitimate
exercise in our pluralism. It is
entirely appropriate for the
president to participate.”
