American Mizrachi Women, the
59-year-old women’s religious
Zionist organization, is changing
its name to AMIT Women Inc.
The name change was announced
by AMW National President Frieda
C. Kufeld.
“Foremost among the reasons
for the change was our desire to
emphasize the organization's
autonomy,” Mrs. Kufeld said.
“Although we do consider
ourselves part of the world
religious Zionist movement, we are
not affiliated, by administration or
economically, with the world
Mizrachi organization or the
National Religious Party in Israel.
Thus, we increasingly felt the need
to avoid confusion and establish
an identity as independent, self-
governing supporters of Israel.
“We chose AMIT for a number
of reasons,” Mrs. Kufeld said. “In
English, it is an acronym for
Americans for Israel and Torah. In
Hebrew, it finds its source in emet,
the word for truth and
steadfastness. We feel this name
expresses our ongoing commitment
to building the land of Israel by
providing religious technological
education for the youngsters who
are her future citizens."
AMIT Women Inc. maintains a
network of schools, community
centers, child care facilities and
Youth Aliyah villages in Israel. In
1981, the organization was
designated Israel's official Reshet
(Network) for religious secondary
technological education by the
Ministry of Education.
According to Mrs. Kufeld, the
change of name in no way signals a
change in the founding goals and
principles. It does, however, have
the ring of modern Hebrew, and
represents committed, energetic
and increasingly young membership
AMIT Women comprises 425
chapters throughout the United
States.
