Jewish solon withdraws
pro-Jackson statements
by Joseph Polakoff
TSI'i Washington correspondent
WASHINGTON—Rep Barney
Frank (D-Mass), among the most
liberal members in Congress, has
withdrawn his statements that the
Rev. Jesse Jackson "has given no
indication that he is anti-Semitic”
and that it would be “a mistake for
Jews to pick a quarrel with him
over the meeting he had with
Arafat.”
Frank, one of the 31 Jewish
congressmen, had said “if you
connect him (Jackson) with being
anti-Semitic because you don’t iike
his views on the Middle East, you
are making problems where they
don’t exist.” He also had said that
the value of Jackson's candidacy
for the Democratic nomination for
president is that it will encourage
blacks to register to vote.
In a letter to the Long Island
Jewish world which had published
his remarks, Frank said he had not
been aware of any anti-Semitic
remarks by Jackson and said, “1
have now learned that I was wrong.”
In his letter, a copy of which
Frank's office delivered to this
reporter, Frank said, “Several
friends have shared with me a
compilation of many inaccurate,
prejudicial remarks which Jesse
Jackson has made over the past
few years about the role of
American Jews.”
While saying that “we should
not automatically assume that
people who advocate policies
critical of Israel are also anti-
Semitic,” Frank added,
“Unfortunately, the evidence I
have now seen convinces me that
Jesse Jackson
Jesse Jackson has not only been
very unfairly critical of Israel, but
that he has also made anti-Semitic
statements about both Israel and
American Jews.”
A supporter of former Vice
President Walter Mondale for the
Democratic presidential nomination,
Frank said, “Given the divisive,
inaccurate, and prejudicial
remarks he (Jackson) has made
over several years about American
Jews, both in the context of our
support for Israel, and in other
ways, 1 do not think this candidacy
will be constructive.”
In his original statement made
while at an American Jewish
Congress dinner at Roslyn, L.I.,
N.Y., Frank had said when asked
about Jackson embracing PLO
chief Yasir Arafat that Arafat also
had met wit h the pope and while he
believes the pope should not have
met with Arafat the meeting
doesn’t make the pope a bigot
However, Frank said Rabbi Meir
Kahane, of the Jewish Defense
League, is a “bigot and hoodlum."
He made this statement in
connection with Kahane's
reference to Jackson as a “blatant
anti-Semite” and “anti-Israel.”
After making his letter public,
Frank, who had endorsed Mel
King's candidacy for mayor of
Boston, said King and Jackson
were “very different,” saying
“Jackson goes far beyond what
Mel King's situation was.” King
who is black and was defeated in
Boston by a white opponent,
received one in three of the Jewish
votes cast, Boston reports showed
One explanation for the relative
lack of Jewish support for him was
that he had difficulty explaining
his leanings toward the PLO
“Mel’s views on Israel are much
more moderately expressed. I
think they’re wrong but they don’t
have the kind of nastiness that
Jackson's (views) have." The
majority of Jewish voters in recent
mayoral elections in Chicago and
Philadelphia backed the black
candidates.
In saying “Kahane is the worst
possible representative we could
have," Frank said, “What Kahane
does is to escalate it and turn it into
a Black-Jewish confrontation
when it ought to be a
confrontation of people against
Jesse Jackson, not people against
blacks."
