Katzlr to discuss Israel’s economy
Issachar Katzir, consul general
of Israel for the Southeastern
United States, will address several
issues relating to the economy of
Israel at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan.
16, at the Atlanta Jewish
Community Center on Peachtree
in Zaban Lounge.
His discussion will include
topics such as “Is There Hope for
Israel's Economy?,” “Has it Really
Collapsed?"; and “Will the Dollar
Become Israel's Official
Currency?"
From 1969-1975, Katzir was an
economist with the Jewish Agency
and the World Zionist Organization.
He said "The key to Israel's success
lies in its people's talents in
creating and marketing products
the world wants. According to
Katzir, “High technology items,
clothing, weapons, foodstuffs,
agricultural knowhow and
produce, computerized graphics-
in these and many other fields
Israel has proven its ability to
produce and export successfully.”
Between 1970, and 1981,
according to Katzir, Israel's
exports increased at a rate higher
than that of the industrial
countries as a whole. Her annual
trade in goods and services
amounts to 120 percent of the
Gross National Product (one of
the hightest ratios in the world)
and her merchandise exports
amount to twice as much as the
non-oil exports of all Arab

The Temple to sponsor
program on Middle East
The Temple will hold a Shabbat
service program at 8:15 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 6, entitled “Seeking
Peace in the Middle East."
Rabbi Alvin Sugarman has
invited two speakers to address
Arab/Israeli approaches to the
Palestinian situation.
Muhammed Nasser, a West
Bank Arab now involved in
attempts to organize a peace
movement in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip with the Israeli “Way to
Peace" movement, will speak
along with Col. Menacham
Milson, an Israeli Jew who is a
leading expert on Middle East
affairs and on the Palestinian
question. Milson served as
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s
Israeli aide-de-camp during
Sadat's historical visit to
Jerusalem in 1977.
These men will provide a provoca
tive and innovative approach in
dealing with matters of peace
between Israel and the
Palestinians.
The community is invited to

Issachar Katzir
last year’s slump, Israel's export
capability is firm, the consul
general emphasizes.
He says that Israeli exports have
grown from $57 million in 1948 to
about $11 billion today.
Government spending on research
• and development has jumped from
.5 percent of the GNP in 1977 to
2.5 percent today—a proportion
comparable to that of the U.S. and
Japan.

NCJW birthday party
planned for Home residents
The National Council of Jewish
Women will combine its monthly
birthday party at the Jewish Home
with a New Year’s Eve dance
program in honor of the December
birthday residents.
The affair will feature the Eli
Frisch Orchestra in Garson
Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Saturday,
Dec. 31.
The honorees this month are
Sadie Carfteld, Vera Cronheim,
Rose Freedman. Rose Fuhr,
Fannie Goldstein, Kate Green,
Goldie Manning. Ethel Myers,
Susie Papuchado, Dora Shamos,
Pauline Zimmerman and Yetta
Zucker.
Members and friends are

Jewish Home council
to meet January 9
The Jewish Home Family
Council will meet at 7:30 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 9, at the Home
Norma Hayes, director of food
services, and Elsa Dozier, R D.,
Ph D., consultant dietician, will
head the program.

School Alumni Association will

New shul officers to be
installed at Beth Jacob
Congregation Beth Jacob will
hold its installation dinner at 6:30
p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8. Rabbi
Emanuel Feldman will install the
incoming officers.
Officers are Michael Feinerman,
M.D., president; Irvin Rabinowitz,
Marsha Spector. Henry Hirsch
and Jonathan Levin, vice
presidents; Aaron Eisenstein,
recording secretary; William
Lerner, financial secretary; Harold
Dershowitz, treasurer; A. Robert
Maran, parliamentarian; and
Tillie Shapiro, honorary treasurer.
Awards will be given to
members who have worked for the
congregation during the past year.
Also, awards for “Member of the
Year” will be given to members
who have given their time and
effort to further the work of Beth
Jacob.

Youth workers council plans
Tu B’Shevat teen dance
The Atlanta Jewish Youth
Workers Council and the Jewish
National Fund are co-sponsoring
a Tu B’Shevat dance for all Jewish
youth in grades eight-12.
The dance will be held from 8
p.m.-midnight Saturday, Jan. 14,
at the AJCC at Zaban. There will
be a disc jockey. Admission is the
cost of planting one tree in Israel
$5 a teen.

AJCC Club 50 to take
imaginary trip to China
AJCC Club 50 will take a “Slow
Boat Through China’—an imaginary
tour, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8,
at Zaban Park.
Nate and Yalta Radin, who
recently returned from a 21-day
tour, including a six-day cruise
downstream on the Yangtze River
between Chongoing and Wuhan,
will present a travelogue of their
trip
Admission is $1 for members
and $2 for non-members.

Plaque presentation
Dr. Gilbert and Lynn Wildstein are presented a plaque for the
woodland of 2,000 trees that have been planted in Israel in
conjunction with Dr. Walter and Arlene Wildstein. The woodland
is in memory of their sister-in-law, Josi Wildstein. Making the
presentation is Linda Baron (left), special projects vice president of
the Atlanta JNF Council.
