it's false. Why won’t you write a
letter, an op-ed piece, or do some
thing to publicly get the truth out
and stop all this.’ He (Young)
would always say he’d get around
to it, but it would never be forth
coming.”
Charles F. Wittenstein, South
ern civil rights director for the
Anti-Defamation League says, “We
were exceedingly disappointed that
Young w'ould not even answer our
letters requesting a written state
ment that we could use when the
issue arose. He seemed willing to
allow the false notion to persist:
the Jews had somehow been responsi
ble for his resignation."
Young counters that press mem
bers have been in attendance at
many of the private gatherings in
question, and at least two articles
appeared detailing the true resig
nation process, one in The New
York Times, and one in the Wash
ington Post.
Still trying to explain the matter,
Young added, “But it was not my
crusade. I was trying to survive. I
didn’t have any money. I had to
feed my family. I had to pack up
and move from New York to Atlan
ta. It isn’t that I didn’t try to set the
record straight, or even t Vl ?‘ the
story never really got out, but it
was never enough.”
Reflecting further, Young admit
ted, “There was a lot of hostility
over a lot of things. My resignation
brought it out into the open. 1 felt
that what really happened was that

the Jewish community and black
community had come to an end.
There had to be negotiated a new
relationship of equity and broth
erhood...It was almost like this
incident around which a new rela
tionship had to be defined.”
Revelations about Andrew
Young’s feelings about Louis Far-
rakhan and a host of other black-
Jewish issues may proffer a new
insight into tensions between the
two groups. The day a man as sen
sitive, genteel and intelligent as
Andrew Young can identify with a
hate merchant like Louis Farrak-
han, is the day the moderate en
dorses the maniacal.
