Repeatedly through history Jews
are singled out as scapegoats for
groups facing economic hardship.
This form of bigotry is surfacing
once again in the media as farmers
face foreclosures and continued
hardship. They are easy prey for
radical extremist groups who offer
them a variety of remedies which ill
serve their present need.
This issue has now surfaced in
Georgia as farmers face increasing
financial problems. The American
Jewish Committee will present an
informative program on this develop
ment at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec.
18, at Tower Place Hotel. The
program will feature “Seeds of
Hate,” a segment of ABC-TV’s
“20/20” series, and a speech by
Rabbi A. James Rudin.
James Rudin
Rabbi Rudin, Director of AJC’s
Interreligious Affairs Department,
was part of the investigative team
that assessed the situation in Kansas
and Iowa. Rabbi Rudin’s contacts
with church leaders in America
enabled him to develop broad-
based support in countering the
anti-Semitic theology espoused by
the Christian Identity movement.
Rudin is the author of “Israel for
Christians, Evangelical & Jews in
an Age of Pluralism, Prison or
Paradise?” And “The New Religious
Cults.” He broadcasts a weekly
religious commentary heard on 50
radio stations around the country.
The meeting is open to the
community. Reservations are required
and can be made by calling the
American Jewish Committee office,

the southeast have received letters
announcing the Camp Judaea Capital
Fund Campaign.
Founded 25 years ago and spon
sored by the Hadassah Zionist Youth
Commission, Camp Judaea in
Hendersonville is one of five regional
junior camps designed to provide a
unique experience in living Judaism.
Camp Judaea is the summer
camp embodiment of Young Judaea,
the youth movement of Hadassah,
which is the oldest Jewish youth
movement and the oldest Zionist
youth organization in the United
States. The camp program is designed
to translate into at day-by-day living
pattern those values which comprise
the Young Judaean program on a
year-round basis.
Young Judaea, a movement of
over 8,000 youths, has produced
over half a million graduates in its
75 year history; many of these
graduates serve as counselors at
the camp after having gone to the
senior camp, Tel Yehuda in Barryville,
N.Y., and the year program in
Israel. . . .
Campers from ages 9 to 15 partici
pate in the same range of activities
as other overnight camps and also
have distinctively Jewish activities
including hiking with the Israeli
Tsofim, music, modern Hebrew
study, dance, drama, crafts and
group discussions.
Grooming leadership for the
American Jewish community, Camp
Judaea is playing a significant role
in helping to safeguard our heritage
in communities all over the country.
Many of the leaders in synagogue,
Federation, Jewish community
centers and other Jewish organiza
tions are Camp Judaea graduates.
Many of the facilities at the
camp were in place before the
camp was purchased 25 years ago.
Plans for renovation have already
been drawn up. They include a new
kitchen, an expanded dining room,
an indoor sports center, a chapel
for outdoor services, refurbished
housing for staff and guests, an
improved infirmary and doctor's
quarters and expanded computer
facilities. In order to make the
master plan a reality, the goal has
been set at $750,000.
Gail Lieb of Columbia, S.C.,
serves as camp chairman with Sara
Egozi of Miami, as co-chairman.
Each Hadassah regional president
and camp delegate comprise the
committee which meets periodically
during the year to set camp policy.
Howard and Pearl Lefkowitz who
met at Camp Judaea in the 1960s
and who are in leadership positions
in their Jewish community in Orlando,
are now sending their children to
the camp. They are co-chairing the
campaign with A1 and Sandee Burger
of Miami. The Burgers’ children,
Andy and Susan, have been active
in Young Judaea and attended
both the junior and senior camps.
