People doing UStd fltftcrs
by Robyn Freedman Spizman
No job is too big or too small for
this month’s L’Chaim personality,
Bill Breman. Whether he is delivering
Meals on Wheels or driving the
van for the Khan Group Home
residents, he is a man who is willing
to fill any shoes.
When Marilyn Ehrilich nominated
Bill, she stressed how dedicated he
is to community service. From
volunteering for DART (Dial-a-
ride transportation), to numerous
presidencies and chairmanships. Bill’s
dedication to helping others has no
limits and knows no boundaries.
He simply states: “I’ll do anything 1
can that they ask me to do.”
A man of this compassion and
unending caring is unique, and this
is why Bill Breman was chosen for
L’Chaim. He exemplifies the true
meaning of this column. It was said
that Bill is “often characterized as a
private person, who in his own
quiet way, has been a force for
positive change in Atlanta Jewish
communal life.”
Until his retirement in 1979, he
was president of Breman Steel
Company and a leader in his field.
While he is formally retired, the
word hardly fits! When I arrived at
his office, stacks of papers, letters,
files and more, confirmed that this
is not a man who is retired.
With reference to my reaction to
the stacks of correspondence, Bill
smiled with a gleam in his eye as he
explained it was from his volunteer
work. Yet I noticed letterheads
from almost every organization I
know. It seemed Bill Breman ran a
one-man show, able and ready to
volunteer.
Bill Bremen: dedicated
Being a native Atlantan myself, I
always wonder how we get so lucky
to have a man like this in our
community. Bill’s story, though,
has special roots in that he knew
things about Atlanta I had never
heard about.
On his fifth birthday. Bill came
to Atlanta to visit. His family was
planning to move here since his
father was going into a family steel
business. Bill recalled riding on a
to community service.
street car along Capitol Avenue. It
was a cold day and he stood by the
stove to stay warm. However, he
did more than that. He backed up
to it unexpectedly and burned himself.
Young Bill didn’t think much of
Atlanta, thanks to that ride, and
wanted to go back to Chicago
“where it was warm.”
Yet his family moved to Atlanta,
