The Bat Mitzva ot Jana Beth
Glass of Dunwoody will take
place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday,
Dec. 28, at Ahavath Achim
Synagogue. A congregational
kiddush will follow.
Jana is the daughter of Arlene
and Ronald Glass. Grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Sam Glass of
Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Mr.
and Mrs. Sol Farbman of Wichita,
Kan.
Fred Katz, D.O., of Atlanta
recently presented a scientific paper
at the 90th annual convention and
scientific seminar of the American
Association.
Katz’s paper, “Radiological
Diagnosis of Low Back Pain, CT
Scan of the Lumbar Spine,” was
presented at the American Osteo
pathic Academy of Sclerotherapy
seminar in Atlanta.
He is on the staff of Doctors
H ospital in Tucker and is an associate
clinical professor at the West Virginia
School of Osteopathic Medicine in
Lewisberg.
A fellow and past president of
the American Osteopathic College
of Radiology, Katz is also past
president of the Georgia Osteopathic
Medical Association. He served as
past campaign chairman and is a
board member of the Atlanta Jewish
Federation.
Dr. Bernard L. Kahn of Atlanta
was inducted as a Fellow in the
American Academy of Optometry
at the 63rd annual meeting of the
Academy held in Atlanta. The
Academy serves to promote vision
care through research and educational
programs in optometry and related
sciences.
Dr. Kahn is past president of the
Georgia Optometric Association;
past president of the Fifth District
Optometric Society, and was named
Optometrist of the Year for Georgia
in 1972.

Dr. Robert Marnier of Sandy
Springs, an ophthalmologist, has
been invited to speak to the United
Kingdom Intraocular I mplant Society
on the research results of a new 3M
intraocular lens for cataract surgery
and also to the Ophthalmology
section of the Royal Society of
Medicine on the advanced surgery
for near-sightedness (radial kera-
totomy) in London.
Marmer will join with the ori
ginator of radial keratotomy.
Professor S. N. Fyodorov of the
Soviet Union, to present lectures
and discussions on these surgical
advances in eye research.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack D. Franco of
Atlanta, along with 13 children,
grandchildren, and one great
grandchild, are celebrating the
couple’s 52nd wedding anniversary
with a family cruise. The cruise
ship Song of Norway will take the
Francos to ports-of-call in Cancun
and Cozumel, Mexico, Ocho Rios,
Jamaica, and the Grand Cayman
Islands.
This is their second family cruise;
Mrs. Franco feels that travelling
brings the family closer together.

Gitli Needleman of New York
City has been elected president of
the Women’s Branch of the Union
of Orthodox Jewish Congregations
of America.
The Bar Mitzva of Adam
Michael Burns of Roswell will
take place at 10 a.m. Saturday,
Dec. 28, at Congregation Beth
Shalom. A congregational kiddush
will follow.
Adam is the son of David and
Arlene Burns. Grandparents are
Allen and Celia Jacobs of Boston,
and Gussie Burns of Waterbury,
Conn.
Bradley University recently
honored Sam Rothberg, international
chairman of the Israel Bond Organi
zation, and Mrs. Rothberg at the
annual dinner of its board of trustees
in Peoria, Ill.
Rothberg and his wife, Jean,
were presented with Bradley’s 11th
annual President’s Award for
“exemplary leadership and commit
ment to the university.”
A trustee for many years and
now an honorary trustee, Rothberg
was named honorary national
chairman of “Campaign for Bradley:
Excellence Today and Tomorrow.”
Dr. Morris and Sherri Soriano
announce the birth of a son, Joseph
Morris, on Nov. 25.
Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
Sanford Orkin, and Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Soriano, all of Atlanta. Great-
grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
M orris Hartman and Mrs. Juana
Habib of Atlanta.
Joseph was given the Hebrew
name Yosef in honor of his paternal
grandfather.
The bris was performed by Dr.
JoeTate, with Rabbi Robert Ichay
officiating.

Rabbi lsser and SuAnn Pliner of
South Bend, Ind., announce the
birth of a daughter, Adina Miriam,
on Nov. 20.
Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
Irvin Pliner of Marietta, and Mr.
and Mrs. Melvin Polsterof Fairlawn,
N.J.
Great-grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Morris Chernn of North Miami
Beach, and the late Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Robkin.
Adina was named for her great
grandmother, the late Mae Rhodes.
Dr. Kenneth W. Stein, associate
professor of Near Eastern history
and political science at Emory
University, delivered several lectures
on contemporary Middle Eastern
affairs recently. In October he
lectured at the Central Agency for
Jewish Education in Miami, and at
the Chattanooga Jewish Federation
he lectured about terrorism in the
Middle East, in November he lectured
on the peace process at the Mobile
Jewish Welfare Fund, and in
December delivered lectures on the
Arab-lsrael conflict to the Air
Command and Staff College and
the Air War College at Maxwell
Air Force Base in Montgomery.

Alan Pesky, a vice chairman of
the Coalition to Free Soviet Jews,
has been elected to a two-year term
as chairman of the Coalition.

Martin Libowsky of Pensacola
Beach, Fla., was a finalist in the
1985 Heart of Gold Award.
Sponsored by the Gannett Founda
tion and the Pensacola News Journal,
the award is given annually to an
outstanding humanitarian in the
Northwest Florida or South Alabama
area. A banquet for the winner and
four finalists was held on Oct. 30 in
Pensacola.
Libowsky, a furniture manufac
turer representative, raised money
to help the family of a high school
coach who died of cancer. He
raised over $ 100,000 for the Ronald
McDonald House by selling lapel
pins he designed and by placing
cannisters for donations in his
customers’ stores across the Gulf
Coast. Last Christmas Eve, he and
his children visited Sacred Heart
Children’s Hospital with toys and
gifts donated by his friends and
customers.
Robin and David Bogart of
Jerusalem announce the birth of a
son. Nosson Simcha, on Oct. 9.
The bris was performed by Rabbi
David Epstein on Dec. 1.
Grandparents are Arlene and
Alvin Waltzer of Miarni, and Eleanor
and Larry Bogart of Atlanta.

Amy was given the Hebrew name
Avital Bunsa in memory of her
maternal grandfather, Victor Silbert,
and her paternal great-grandmother,
Beatrice Mendelson. The naming
took place at her parents’ home on
Dec. 1.

Eve is the daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. Robert J. Alpern.
Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
J ulian Shapiro of Houston, and
Harry Alpern of Albany, N.Y.,
and the late Sarah Alpern.
Rabbi Ronald L. Gray of
Atlanta has been named executive
vice president of Boys Town
Jerusalem. He will serve as chiel
executive officer for Boys Town’s
international programs and
operations on behalf of the eight-
school academic, religious and
technical training center for over
1,300 economically disadvantaged
Israeli youths.
For the past 15 years, Gray
was spiritual leader of Congrega
tion B’nai Torah in Indianapolis,
Indiana’s largest Orthodox
synagogue.
He is a member of the National
Rabbinic Cabinet of State of
Israel Bonds and the national
board of directors of the Union
of Orthodox Jewish Congrega
tions of America, founder and
past president of the Indianapolis
Board of Rabbis and a former
board member of Indianapolis’s
Jewish Welfare Federation, Jewish
Community Relations Council,
Bureau of Jewish Education and
Hebrew Academy.
He and his wife, the former
Rachel Vitsick of Baltimore,
have four children. His mother
is Mrs. Saul Gray of Atlanta.
