Faye Mitchell’s roots, life
provide rich canvas for art
by Karl Schnittke
Atlanta artist Faye Behar Mitchell
has been selected for a six-person
show at Agnes Scott College Jan.
19 through Feb. 23.
Mrs. Mitchell, whose parents
were from Istanbul, Turkey, was
born and reared in Atlanta. Her
mother was a dress designer in
Turkey and instilled an early sense
of art in her daughter. In 1952, she
became a dance student of Ruth
Mitchell. She later performed for
Ruth Mitchell’s company and has
remained involved with the group,
most recently traveling to New
York to sketch the dancers during
rehearsals and performances.
This lifelong interest in dance
and the human figure combined
with influences of her European
background have helped create Faye
Mitchell’s paintings and drawings.
She may properly be called a story
teller, too, since each painting is a
rich, personal narrative of sights
and people, displayed in a tapestry
of bold colors.
An example of her unique vision
appears on the cover of the N ovember
1985 issue of Peachtree Papers.
The 4' by 5' pastel painting, entitled
“The Fortune Teller,” has a self-
portrait of the artist in the lower
Atlanta artist Faye Mitchell in her studio.
lefthand corner while the rest of
the canvas is filled with sketches of
familiar people.
Last year Mrs. Mitchell traveled
to China, Bangkok, Hong Kong
and Bali with 13 women artists.
The month-long trip gave her an
opportunity to work non-stop with
oil crayons, pastels and other mixed
media as well as share experiences
with her peers.
Mrs. Mitchell has most recently
been associated with the Ariel Gallery
in T.U.L.A., a cooperative of 17
artists. Her work is included in
many private collections, Emory
University’s art collection and
corporate offices throughout the
United States.
In describing her art, Mrs. Mitchell
says, “My state of feeling is expressed
though art, which I love. My back
ground and information influences
my use of color design and story
telling. In doing this, I feel
comfortable with my life, not
separating my life from work.”
Camp AJECOMCE to celebrate
25 years of shaping kids’ lives
Special to The Southern Israelite
How do you say Happy Birthday
to a Camp?
As Camp AJECOMCE enters
its 25th year at Zaban Park, the
ideas are flowing and the plans for
a celebration are creating an atmos
phere of excitement and anticipation.
The Camp AJECOMCE Alumni
Association has got its wheels in
motion ready to contact and gather
names and addresses of those
“Ajecampers,” Staff, Committee
members, and friends of AJ ECOMCE
who have shown, in the past and
the present, their support and love.
For Camp AJECOMCE is not
just a camp, it’s a proving ground,
it’s a place where our Jewish children
take chances with life, try that one
task they never thought they could
do—extend that hand of compassion
and friendship that time does not
always allow in school.
For the Southern Jewish com
munity of tomorrow, we owe it to
our children to make Camp
AJECOMCE the finest camping
facility possible today. But most of
all, we owe it to our tradition to
share the AJECOMCE experience,
past and present, all through 1986.
The Camp AJECOMCE com
munity will be sharing special events
with the Jewish community. To
culminate this year of celebrations,
on Sept. 13 and 14, 1986, we will be
creating a weekend of fun, merriment
and new memories.
To “kick off” the festivities, we
extend an open invitation to all
those who have shared the
AJECOMCE experience, and those
whose children would like to, for
our 1985 annual reunion on Dec.
22 at the 57th Fighter Group, 3829
Clairmont Road, Chamblee from
2-4 p.m.
Importance is so often placed on
“how” you do things, but not often
enough on “why.” This year, 1986,
the Camp AJECOMCE community
will give the grandest Birthday
Celebration—why? to say
THANK YOU, Carnp AJECOMCE
— Happy Birthday!
