THE CENTER'S
News from the Atlanta Jewish Community Center, Inc.
Kids Konnection
Everyone is aware that one of the more significant changes
in family living in the 1980’s is the “two-working-parents”
phenomenon. It is not uncommon today for children to
come home from school to an empty house, left to their
own wits to watch television or do homework or just idle
away the time. Parents are understandably concerned
with their child’s safety and care in this unsupervised
situation. Well, the Center is coming to the rescue in
1986.

and Woodland in Fulton County, as well as the Hebrew
Academy and Epstein School. Kids Konnection is available
only to AJCC members. For more information about
this much-needed child care alternative, call Sarah
Duerr, 396-3250. You can have more peace of mind in
1986 by sending your child to Kids Konnection at the
AJCC.

Chai Bid Auction—A Success
Our hats are off to all those who made our Chai Bid
Auction II such an outstanding success. Led by chaircouple
Sandy and David Abrams, a team of Jay Kessler, Anne
Rubin, Don Miller, Ann Chorches, Sheila Wynne and
Sharon Silver and dozens ot volunteers made this event
so much fun that people are already beginning to ask
about the next one. In addition, significant funds were
raised for the operation of our Center. The highlight of
the evening was the work of our auctioneer, Lynn
Dempsey, a professional auctioneer from Rome, Ga.,
who volunteered his time for the evening assisted by his
sidekick, Dr. Morris Benveniste. There were over 250
items grabbed by our guests, but the surprise of the
evening was the two Dale Murphy baseball bats which
each went for $500. Our thanks to everyone for supporting
the Center. Look forward to announcements of our next
big bash.
We are introducing “Kids Konnection,” a new and
innovative after-school program which will provide a
quality alternative to where our children can spend their
time between the end of school and their parents' return
home.
Designed by the Center’s Children’s Committee led by
Sandy Coffsky and staffed by our children’s director,
Sarah Duerr, Kids Konnection is composed of safe and
reliable transportation, personalized service and a safe
environment at the Zaban Building. There will also be a
daily snack, supervised study hall and gameroom and a
wide variety of children’s after-school activities. In its
preliminary stages, transportation will be provided by
authorized AJCC vans from Austin, Chestnut, Kingsley,
Vanderlyn and Shallowford schools in DeKalb County
One of the more successful adult education programs
offered by the Center over the past few years has been
“Lunch and Learn,” a noon-time study program. In 1986,
we add a new twist, “Introduction to the Study of
Traditional Jewish Literature.” Two Tuesdays each
month, four different rabbis will lead the participants in
an exploration of Jewish texts while breaking bread over
a delicious kosher lunch at the Peachtree facility. This
semester Rabbis Ilan Feldman, Juda Mintz, Marvin
Richardson and Zvi Shapiro will each teach two sessions
on “Tehillim (Psalms and related literature).” The cost
for the eight sessions is $25, with a $4 optional lunch. The
first class will be held on Jan. 16. For more information
or to register, call Chana Shapiro, cultural arts director,
875-7881.
Give To The Federation
The Atlanta Jewish Federation moves into its 1986
Campaign with the full support of the staff and board of
the Atlanta Jewish Community Center. The Center could
not survive without the funds provided through this
campaign. Last year, over $600,000 was given to the
Center by the AJF. The board of the Center urges all
members of the Center to give to the campaign, for
without the support of this vital drive, your membership
dues and fees would be at least twice as high, and many
people who cannot afford to pay the full fee for the
Center would be denied service. Keep the Center going!
