Terrorists tell investigators
of plans to attack Tel Aviv
by Edwin Eytan
PARIS (JTA)—The three ter
rorists who attacked the El A1
terminal at Vienna airport were
planning to commandeer an Israeli
plane, take the Israeli passengers
hostage and fly to Israel to carry
out a terrorist attack there, Austria
radio and television announced
Monday quoting official sources.
The Austrian television said that
the two surviving terrorists—the
third was killed in the shootout
with the Austrian police while trying
to escape—told investigators that
this was their plan. They said that
this is why they had not made any
preparations for their escape. 1 hey
commandeered a car after the attack
and were captured by the Austrian
police a few miles from Vienna.
Austrian officials said they intend
to continue investigating the attack
until all light is shed on the atrocity.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in Western
Europe condemnations of the ter
rorists and of “all those who back
them” poured in. In Strasbourg the
21-nation Council of Europe con
demned today the two attacks, at
Vienna and Rome airports, and
reaffirmed its determination to fight
international terrorism.
The Council of Europe Secretary
General Marcelino Oreja also sent
a telegram of condolences to the
Italian and Austrian governments
to express “my feelings of solidarity
in the fight against international
terrorism.”
In Rome, close to 1,000 people,
among them the U.S. and the Israeli
ambassadors, attended the funeral
of 11-year-old Natasha Simpson,
killed during the Friday attack. A
personal representative of the p 0 p e
attended a Roman Catholic mass
in the chapel of the North American
college. Later, a private Jewish
service was held and kadish was
recited.
The girl’s father, Victor Simpson
an Associated Press news editor
based in Rome, is believed to be
Catholic. The girl’s mother, Daniela
Petroff Simpson, who works for
Time magazine, is Jewish.
Israel’s Ambassador Eytan Ron
and U.S. Ambassador Maxwell
Rabb attended the mass which was
celebrated by a dozen clergyman
and attended by Archbishop Justin
Rigali of Los Angeles, head of the
Vatican diplomatic academy.
Bonner addresses synagogue;
wants prisoners of Zion freed
BOSTON (JTA) Yelena Bonner,
wife of Soviet dissident scientist
Andrei Sakharov, visited a synagogue
in Newton, Mass., during Sabbath
services Dec. 21 and expressed
hope that “all the prisoners of Zion
will be free as well as all my friends
of different nations and religions.”
She seemed to include her
husband, a Nobel Laureate in physics,
who is in exile in Gorky for his
outspoken criticism of Soviet \ iola-
tionsof human rights, inthecategory
of “prisoners of Zion."
He is considered by many Israelis
to be a "prisoner of Zion” because
of the help he has given Jews who
are unable to leave the Soviet U nion,
she said. Sakharov's family are of
the Russian Orthodox church.
Bonner, w hose mother was Jew ish
and father Armenian, made clear
she was not a believer nor does she
consider herself a Jew. “My up
bringing gives me deep respect toward
all beliefs, all religions," she said.
She is in the U.S. for medical
treatment.
She came to Newton, a town in
western Massachusetts where her
son, Alexei Semyonov, and daughter,
Tatiana Yankelevich, live. She visited
Congregation Mishkan Tefila. a
Conservative congregation, at the
invitation of its rabbi, Richard
Yellin. She spoke from the pulpit.
Her remarks were translated by
her son.
In expressing hope for freedom
for those refused exit from the
U.S.S.R., Bonner referred to "my
many personal friends, like Anatoly
Shcharansky, I hope will be reunited
with their relatives.” She said she
accepted the invitation to the
synagogue “especially because there
is anti-Semitism in the world. I
find it impossible not to come to a
synagogue.”
