The Bat Mitzva of Amy
Michelle Budow of Marietta
will take place at 9:30 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 18, at Congregation
Etz Chaim. A congregational
kiddush will follow.
Amy is the daughter of Penny
and Stephen Budow. Grand
parents are Faye and Philip
Basow of Cranbury, N.J., and
Ann Budow of Jersey City, N.J.
Dr. Sanford M. Shapero has
been named executive director of
the City of Hope. This marks the
first time in some 30 years that the
medical center, founded under Jewish
auspices in 1913, will have had a
change in its top management post.

Bert Raphael ofToronto, a lawyer
who is chairman of the Canadian
Committee of Lawyers and Jurists
for Soviet Jewry, has been appointed
the 19th president of the Advocates
Society of Canada. He is the society’s
third Jewish president.
Stuart Adler of Atlanta graduated
from the School of Architecture at
Georgia Tech with high honors,
being on the Deans List during the
entire program. He will live on a
kibbutz before returning to the
States next fall for his graduate
program.
He is the son of Edna and Lou
Adler.

Stan Fitterman of Atlanta
graduated fall quarter magna cum
laude from Georgia State University
with a bachelor of science degree
from the College of Public and
Urban Affairs.
Stan, a member of The Golden
Key, Phi Kappa Phi National Honor
Fraternity and Mortar Board, is
the son of Dr. and Mrs. Israel
Fitterman, and is married to the
former Sheara Fairbairn of Atlantic
Beach, Fla.

Michael Bogart Weiland, formerly
of Atlanta, a confirmand of The
Temple, is vice president for services
of SOS International, private supplier
of emergency medical attention and
evacuation worldwide.
For the past three years, he has
travelled all over the world setting
up emergency medical facilities and
plans for such clients as the State
Department and most Fortune 500
companies, as well as for individuals.
SOS International is a multi
national corporation with primary
offices in Philadelphia, and Geneva,
Switzerland, and maintains a full
service office in Atlanta.
Weiland has been asked to relocate
in Singapore and Hong Kong to
better establish facilities in Southeast
Asia and the Orient as well as
opening up mainland China. He
expects to live in the Orient for at
least three years.
He is the son of Rhoda and Bert
Weiland of Marietta.
Newcomers
The Bar Mitzva of Marvin
Victor Sackin of Atlanta will
take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday,
Jan. 18, at The Temple. A congre
gational kiddush will follow.
Marvin is the son of Stephanie
and Stanley Sackin. Grandparents
are Fanny Sackin of Los Angeles
and the late Ernest Sackin, and
Bobbie Cook of Denver and the
late Marvin Victor Cook.
Atlanta actor and clown Kenny
Raskin has returned from Santiago,
Chile, where he performed in a
national Chilean television special,
M ARTES 13. It was, according to
Raskin, a “sort of Ed Sullivan
Show of Chile, with lots of singers,
a comedy juggling duo from Italy,
a French sound impressionist, and
an American clown—me!”
He will spend two weeks in Texas
in February as an artist-in-residence
for the City of El Paso Arts Resources
Department. He will perform in
schools and arts centers, and will
also teach clowning to, and perform
with, a resident professional theatre
company.
Raskin will perform his one-
man clown show at Seven Stages
Theater on April 25-27 at 8 p.m.
Influenced by the European style
of clown-theater, the performance
combines theatrical pieces, clown
characters, music and juggling, as
well as a healthy dose of audience
participation.

Barbara B. Balser of Atlanta will
chair the long-range planning com
mittee of the Committee of 200.
She was installed at the organization’s
annual meeting held recently in
London. The Committee of 200 is
a national organization of successful
American women business owners
and executives.
Balser is the president and chief
executive officer of MCG Financial
Corporation, based in Atlanta. MCG
is a consulting and brokerage firm
specializing in corporate and indi
vidual tax advantaged opportunities.
Balser’s community activities
include serving as vice president of
the executive committee for the
Southeast Region of the Anti-
Defamation League.
James and Elaine Levine announce
the birth of a daughter, Olivia
Harris,, on Dec. 12.
Grandparents are Bernard and
Enid Galler of Ann Arbor, Mich.,
and Max and Phyllis Levine of
Atlanta. Great-grandmother is Sylvia
Harris of Orlando, Fla.
Olivia was named in memory ol
her maternal great-grandfather, Louis
J. Harris. She w’as given the Hebrew
name Aviva in memory of her
paternal great-grandtather, Abraham
M. Rosenberg.

Hana Elisabeth, on Dec. 8.
Grandparents are Edith and Eli
Kaplan of Hackensack, N.J., and
Betty and Burt Schear of Dayton,
Ohio. Great-grandmother is Evelyn
Kaplan of Plantation, Fla.
Hana was given the Hebrew name
Gisa Esther in honor of her maternal
great-grandmother, Gussie Friedman
of New Jersey, and her paternal
great-grandmother, Esther Litwack
of Cincinnati.

birth of a daughter, Talya Chaya,
on Nov. 7.

Alan is the son of Laraine
and Lowell Fine, and the grandson
of Pauline Fine and the late A.
D. Fine, and the late Shirle and
Leon Fay, all of Atlanta.
Lucinda W. Bunnen of Atlanta,
photographer and arts supporter, is
one of the recipients of the 1986
Governor’s Awards in the Arts.
Sponsored by the Georgia Council
for the Arts, the award recognizes
outstanding contributions by indi
viduals and organizations to the
arts in Georgia.
Gov. Joe Frank Harris will present
the awards at a public ceremony in
Symphony Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Gov. Joe Frank Harris presents Norman Shavin (second from

illustrated, prizewinning history book, “Atlanta: Triumph of a
People,” written by Shavin and co-author Bruce Galphin (right).
The proclamation describes the new book as a “spectacular
accomplishment which beautifully celebrates Atlanta's rich history
and serves as a marvelous tribute to this great city and its people."
