Hyman Bookbinder to speak
in Atlanta during King Week
Hyman Bookbinder, AJC’s
Washington representative, has been
an active part of the past 20 years
of struggle for civil rights. It is
especially significant that he has
been invited to Atlanta to participate
in King Week ’86.
As Washington representative
of the AJC, Bookbinder maintains
liaison between the Committee and
agencies of the government, the
Congress, foreign embassies and
Washington representatives of other
religious, civic and human relations
agencies.
In 1979, Bookbinder was named
to the President's Commission on
the Holocaust, and in 1980 to the
U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.
He was executive officer of the
President's Task Force on Poverty
in early 1964 and then served as
assistant director of the Office of
Economic Opportunity from its
inception in 1964 until he joined
the Committee in 1967. In April
1961, he was appointed special
assistant to the Secretary of Com-

ments that included service with
the president's advisory committee
on Labor-Management Policy, the
President's Committee on Equal
Employment Opportunity, and the
President’s Commission on the Status
of Women headed by Eleanor
Roosevelt. Bookbinder has served
as Washington chairman of the Ad
Hoc Committee on the Human
Rights and Genocide Treaties.
Jan. 20, 1986, marks the first
national observance of the Martin
Luther King Jr. Holiday.
In testifying for this holiday on
Feb. 23, 1982. Bookbinder said: "I

on civil rights, economic empower
ment and affirmative action.

news commentator, WSBTelevision;
Ralph G. Neas, executive director.
Leadership Conference on Civil
Rights; Gloria Toote, former assistant
secretary for fair housing; Dr. Mary
Frances Berry, member U.S. Civil
Rights Commission; wrap-up by
Carl Holman, president, the National
Urban Coalition. Introduction of
Jesse Jackson will be by the Hon
Maynard Jackson. Jesse Jackson
will speak at this seminar.
The Atlanta chapter, American
Jewish Committee, the Black, Jewish
Coalition and the National Asso
ciation for the Advancement of
Colored People_will host a reception
following the seminar in Freedom
Hall at the MLK Jr. Center.
