Arnie Sohinki, assistant inter
national director for the B’nai
B’rith Youth Organization, has
been named an “Outstanding
Young Man of America” for
1985.
A recipient of the B’nai B’rith
Youth Richard Klutznick
Scholarship for graduate study
in social work, Sohinki holds a
master’s degree in the field from
the State University of New
York at Buffalo.
He served as regional director
for BBYO in Atlanta and
Minneapolis and as the area
director in Buffalo.
Sohinki has been a member
of the Association of Jewish
Center Workers, the Atlanta
Jewish Youth Workers Council,
B’nai B’rith International and
Toastmasters International.
Ruth Melkonian, M S., and Bonnie
M. Maxon, M S., will lead a six-
week parent support group, “Growing
as Parents: Bridging the G A P.,”
at Northside Pediatric and Adolescent
Medicine in Atlanta beginning
Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Ms. Maxon is an educational
diagnostician. Mrs. Melkonian, also
an educational diagnostician, teaches
a self-contained learningdisabilities
program in the Fulton County School
System. She is a member of Temple
Sinai’s Women’s Committee, OR T,
and the board of Brandeis Women.
Georgia State l niversity will offer
a Jewish Chautauqua Society(JCS)-
sponsored course during the 198b
winter quarter under the direction
of Atlanta Rabbi Philip Kranz.
Kranz. spiritual leader of Temple
Sinai for six years, will teach
“Judaism,” an overview of the his
tory. philosophy, and sociology of
Judaism.
Kranz is a member of the Central
Conference of American Rabbis
and the American Jew ish Congress;
president of Atlanta's Planned
Parenthood; member of the Rabbinic
Board of Alumni Ov erseers of Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion; and in the 1985 class of
Leadership Atlanta, a community
involvement project.
Kranz was a member of the
American Jewish Committee, the
Georgia Committee for Religious
Liberty, the Atlanta Jew ish Federa
tion Israel Affairs Committee, and
president of the Sandy Springs
Ministerial Association.
He was ordained in 1971 at
HUC-JIR in Cincinnati, earning
bachelor’s and master’s degrees in
Hebrew letters.

The Jewish Chautauqua Society
will fund a course during the Spring
1986 semester at Savannah State
College under the direction of
Savannah Rabbi Saul Rubin.
Rubin, in his 14th year as rabbi
of Mickve Israel Congregation, will
teach “Introduction to Judaism,”
covering all of the basic elements
of the Jewish faith.
Rubin is chairman of the Havurah
Committee of the Central Conference
of American Rabbis, convener of
the Savannah Clergy Society, board
member of the Senior Citizens
Council, officer of the Savannah
Ministerial Association, and Rotary
Club member.
He was ordained in 1958 at
Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion in Cincinnati.
He earned a master of Hebrew
letters degree in 1969 and a doctor
of divinity in 1982.
The Bar M itzva of J oseph Micah
Fiksman of Atlanta will take
place at 9 a. m. Saturday, February
1. at Ahavath Achim Synagogue.
A congregational kiddush will
follow.
Joseph is the son of Leah and
Alex Fiksman. and the grandson
of Mrs. Dora Pauline Beckworth
of Baxlev, Ga.
Harriet Konter of Savannah
received the Leadership Training
Graduate designation by the Women's
Council of Realtors. She is one of
65 such designees in the United
States.
Mind' Fine Balser has been hired
by Camp Barney Medintz to supervise
the 1986 Yehud Israel exchange
program.
A native Atlantan, she worked
as the camp's CIT supervisor during
the 1985 season and was a camper,
CIT. and staff member during her
high school and college days.
She is working toward a Ph.D.
in medicine at Emory University.
Her husband is Mark Balser.

Max Shaffer of Atlanta celebrated
his 60th birthday at a party given
by his wife. Freida. at their home
on Dec. 24. In attendance were
Max and Freida’s three children
and grandchild: son Steve and his wife
Sue of Portland. Maine, and their son
Rob Miller; Kenneth and his fiance
Jill Auerbach of Atlanta; and
daughter Janece Shaffer of Atlanta.
Attending and also honored was
Max’s twin sister, Gertrude Shaffer
Savitz of Syracuse. New Y ork and her
son, Sheldon Savitz of New York
City.
On Dec. 28, the Shaffer family
presented Ahavath Achim Synagogue
a Torah in memory ofSamand Esther
Shaffer, parents of Max, Gertrude
and Joe Shaffer.

Erwin Friedman of Savannah
was elected vice president of the
Coastal Empire Council of Boy
Scouts.
Steve Mendel of Atlanta was
recently named assistant director
of Camp Barney Medintz.
For the last seven years, he
has worked as a counselor, unit
head and program director. This
past summer he initiated the
camp’s Israeli culture program.
He recently returned from a
mission to contact Jews in the
Soviet Union.
A graduate of Georgia State
University, he is the son of Herb
and Marlene Mendel.
Tom Glaser was named executive
director of the Athens, Ga. Chamber
of Commerce. He leaves his post of
administrative vice president of the
Savannah Chamber of Commerce.
