This week’s Sidra, Beshallach.
tells of the first occasion that the
Jews received the command to
observe the Shabbat. In our calendar
we have two observances that follow
similar patterns. One, as related in
our Sidra, is the seventh day of
Shabbat, which follows the six
working days of the week, and the
other is the seventh sabbatical year.
Shemitta, which follows the six
years of planting.
One of the central teachings of
Shemitta is conveyed by the order
of the verses in which the Torah
defines the institution of Shemitta.
The verses read as follows:
First: “When you will come into
the land. . . the earth shall rest a
Sabbath unto G-d."
Then: “Six years shall you plant
your field, etc. . . .
The order in the text seems to be
reversed, for the six working years
come before the sabbatical rest
year, and not vice versa. The Torah
should therefore have mentioned
first the six years of planting and
then declared the resting. However,
the order of the verses is deliberate,
for the goal of a “Sabbath unto
G-d,” must be known before starting
out on the six years of planting.
When one “comes into a land”
and desires to establish his way of
life (which involves “working the
soil." i.e. —being busy with material
matters) the first and foremost idea
that he must bear in mind as a goal
is Sabbath—not the “earthly” and
material, but thespiritual and holy.
This approach will insure one against
losing oneself in the material and
mundane aspects of life. Moreover,
the constant awareness of spiritual
purposes transforms the six drab
w orking years into purposeful ones;
they lose much of their drabness
and become more refined and
meaningful.
In a similar way, when we keep
the goal of Shabbat in mind the six
working days of the week become
refined and elevated. Of course,
after experiencing such an “elevated”
week, one’s observance of the Shabbat

becomes similarly elevated. Not
only does one act in accordance
with all the laws, the do’s and
don’ts of Shabbat—of that there is
no question; but one develops a
Shabbat-like frame of mind. N 0
longer does one attend the synagogue
as a convenient business meeting
place or as a social club; nor does
one utilize the leisure hours of this
holy day to analyze the latest stock
market trends. Instead, the inner
peace and tranquility of unhurried
prayer and true Shabbat rest for
oneself and one’s family reign supreme

Other two-week fact-finding
