It can be done
Jews, Arabs living in harmony
by Itzhak Sordo

In the atmosphere of extremism
that we hear lately from some
Israeli officials and others, we have
to emphasize also the voices that
are talking of the possibility of
living together with the Arabs in
Israel, especially the Israeli Arabs,
not as a sign of weakness from our
Jewish side, but as a sign of clear
Jewish identity that doesn’t ignore
the rights of minorities in the Jewish
land, that really signifies Jewish
values. I want to share my ex
periences, and not talk about politics
or about policies. A man is a
molded image of the landscape of
his native land. 1 am talking about
my native landscape to which I've
always been attached. This is the
City of Acco (Acre), a city in the
north of Israel, 21 km from Haifa.
In the old city of Acco, my
parents and other Jewish immigrants
have lived since it was captured
from the Arabs two days after the
Declaration of Independence (1948).
Thirty-eight years have passed
since then and a new city has been
built out of the walls of the old city
and symbolizes how much we are
doing in order to rebuild our home
land. My parents and most of the
other Jews moved to the new city.

Then, as now. I used to think how
natural it is that Arabs and Jews
live side by side in this city —
citizens enjoying equal rights and
mutual dignity. They agree to live
in a Jewish State and to observe all
the laws the same as any other
citizen.
Today, there are 40,000 inhabitants
in Acco, three fourths are Jews,
one fourth are Moslems, a few

and Arabs live together. It's

ter,” and it’s a living truth

hundred are Christians and a handful
arc Bahai.
Acco has existed as a city for
more than 4,000 years. Twice in its
history, it became a city of inter
national importance: The first time
was when the Crusaders made it
their capital for more than 100
years. The second was during the
Ottoman-Turkish Empire when
Daer-El Omar, and later Gazor
Phaha, rebuilt it on the Crusaders'
ruins. That was in the 18th century.
During Gazor Phaha's time, it was
the operative capital of the land of
Israel. It was famous all over the
world, especially when Napoleon,
in 1799, was unable to breach its
walls.
When you walk through the alley-
ways of the old city today, you are
enchanted by the sites and understand
quickly that Acco also has a deep
connection to Jewish history: Here,
in Acco, for example, the Ram bam
( Maimonides) visited in 1166, and
declared it a part of Eretz Yisroel.
During Gazor El Phaha’s rule, he
appointed a Jew, Haim Forhi, his
minister of the Treasury. Haim
became Gazor’s right-hand man.
On April 5, 1947, the daring
Atz.el Fighters (the leader of that
organization was Menachem Begin)
broke into Acco prison to free the
Jewish political prisoners that the
British held in their central prison
in Acco. This successful operation
was called “The Fall ol the British
Bastile.”
1 love to walk in the streets of
Acco, to see the abundance of
historic sites and the human mosaic
living in harmony. More than that,
in new Acco, there is a neighborhood
where Jews and Arabs live together.
It’s called “the Wolfson Quarter,”
and it’s a living truth that when
people live together day by day. the
barriers and stereotypes disappear.
1 love to walk in the market
where you can see Jewish and Arab
shoppers; to talk with some who
can tell you stories of the last 40
years in this old neighborhood. In
addition, I love to watch the sea;
that is a real drawing point of the
cooperation between fishermen, Jews
and Arabs, the boat owners and
the swimmers in the “Argoman
Beach,” a blue sea which doesn’t
distinguish between Arabs and Jews.
1 love Acco for the new and the old
and the contrasts that you can find,
and on a clear day you can see
forever.
1 think that it’s appropriate to
finish with the story about Rabbi
Yochanon BenZakai. He was always
the first to greet all others, even the
stranger in the market place, with a
greeting of Shalom (peace). Rav
Hisda was accustomed to greeting
strangers w ith a greeting of Shalom
(peace); Rav Kahana was accustomed
to saying to the stranger, “Shalom
(peace) unto you my master.”
Shouldn’t those rabbis be our role
models today?
This is my experience and all the
demagogic speeches can’t convince
me that we can’t live together in a
Jewish State. 1 believe we can!
