A cantor recited kaddish, the prayer for the dead. I he Israeli leader visited the documentation center where he examined photo graphs and fragments of literature attesting to the atrocities committed there more than 40 years ago. Peres walked along the rows of deserted barracks, vestigial remains of the Holocaust. Hesaid little. He was visibly moved and fought to hold back tears. At least 20 members of his family were among the hundreds of thousands of Jews and others who perished at Bergen-Belsen. Peres’ visit to the site was described as private, something quite apart from the political and economic aspects of his official three-day visit to West Germany. Although he was accompanied by a ranking politician. Prime Minister Hans Albrecht of the federal state of l ower Saxony, on his tout of Bergen-Belsen, their conversation concerned the past and plans to expand the documentation center into a research and educational facility that will serve as a meeting place for German youth, the post war generation with no memories of the Third Reich. Peres said after the visit that he went to Bergen-Belsen in part to promote understanding and re conciliation with the German people. He spoke of the new democratic Germany with which Israel wants to establish cooperation and promote understanding. The Israeli prime minister said he was primarily interested m launchinga dialogue but this could not be done unless memories of the past are kept alive. In an interview Sunday with the German newspaper Bild, Peres said of the Holocaust that Israelis and Jews all over the world “cannot forget or let this be forgotten.” He added that “a new Germany has arisen from that hell and that gives me reason for hope." Peres arrived in Bonn early Sunday evening and met with Germany’s Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher. He postponed his other official meetings until after the visit to Bergen-Belsen. But he hosted a breakfast for West German Jewish leaders Monday morning at the Schloss Giemnich near Bonn, the official residence for guests of the government. Anti-Jewish black cult emerging by Arnold Ages JTA - MIAMI A new black cult called Temple of Love has emerged in Miami. The quasi-religious organization, in existence for almost five years now, was portrayed recently in the Miami Herald as an ominous col lection of cultists with anti-white and anti-Jewish teachings. The leader of the Temple of Love styles himself as Moses Israel and preaches his anti white and anti-Semitic doctrine through print, tape recordings and film. He is turbaned, bejeweled and guarded by a cordon of men armed with six-foot staffs. According to the Miami Herald, the cult has acquired more than $2 million worth of real estate in two Florida counties and has “created an insular communal economy based on discipline and withdrawal.” TheTemple of Love makes frequent use of the Tetragrammation, the ineffable four-letter name of the divinity in the Hebrew Bible—in its logos and preaching. Locally, members of the group are referred to as Yahwehs. The issue of the Miami Herald in which the expose appeared featured a picture of a woman member of the cult standing next to a Hebrew inscription bearing the word. Hulon Mitchell, the cult’s leader. the son of a mainline Christian preacher (who is not thrilled about his son’s new career) has asserted without qualification his messianic- role and has take the name Yahweh Ben Yahweh in addition to Moses Israel. The cult has a fleet of buses and tractor-trailers with the word Yahweh emblazoned on the back. The vehicles crisscross the country, bringing the faithful to hear Moses Israel speak — as he has done in New York City, Kansas City, St. Louis and Chicago. Moses Israel’s main message is that the American blacks are the true Jews dwelling in the land of the “white devil.” His message has been quite well received, reflected in the financial assets that have been accumulated—’ up to $50 million in all, according to some estimates. In a rare interview accorded the Miami Herald, the cult’s leader was asked why he wore jewelry. . “Because 1 am the heir to Yahweh,” he replied, “and the Bible says quite clearly that all the silver and gold belongs to God.” The teachings of the cult are simple and can be reduced to eight points: The members represent the lost tribe of Judah; they will soon go to Israel; they must follow a kosher diet; without white garments they are naked (the Yawehs carry on their solicitations wearing white hoods and robes); whites are said to be the evil descendants of Eve and the serpent; the Bible is the foundation of all knowledge; Moses Israel is the first messiah, and blacks must separate themselves from white society. A number of Miamians have expressed guarded praise of the Temple of Love, particularly because of the organization’s self-help programs and economic enterprises designed to improve employment opportunities for local blacks. The cult has investments in a printing facility, tailorings enterprises and vegetable cultivation. In describing a recent service at the Temple of Love, the Miami Herald journalist recorded the way in which the name Yahweh is inv oked as a kind of mantra. “Mitchell’s voice rises and he says, over and over again, ‘Yahweh, Yahweh, Yahweh!’ The crowd picks it up, repeating it until the words run together in a hypnotic chant: ‘Yahweh, Yahweh, Yahweh’. . Hulon Mitchell came to his new cult leadership after a stint in the Black Muslim movement. During his association with that movement his job was to teach Elijah Muhammed’s philosophy of sell- help and racial hatred, explained one former member, 1 braham Pasha. Moses Israel refuses to discuss his separation from the Black Muslims.
