Super Sunday volunteers
will reach out to everyone
Super Sunday ’86, a one-day
effort to reach thousands of Atlanta’s
Jewish households on behalf of the
1986 Federation Campaign, will
take place on Sunday, Feb. 16.
Co-chairmen Rachel Miller and
Jack Hillman expect a record re

in Atlanta and other communities
throughout the United States for
the last five years.
As in the past, hundreds of volun

at the First National Bank of Atlanta
Operations Center on Piedmont
Road. There will be two telephone
shifts: 9:00 a.m.-I 1:00 a.m. and
5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
The newly formed Young Leader
ship Council is making a special
effort to staff the evening telephone

In the aftermath of a fire that
totally destroyed a major portion
of the main plant of Empire Kosher
Poultry Inc. Sunday afternoon,
officials said they are determined
to fill all outstanding orders as
quickly as possible, though it will
be some months before they will be
able to get back into full production.
Empire is the largest supplier of
kosher poultry in the country.
The section of the Mifflintown,
Pa., plant which burned is said to
be 40 or 50 years old. Empire
spokesman Rod Pry said the cause
of the blaze is believed to be electrical,
though fire department reports were
not complete at press time.
The plant was closed at the time,
with only security guards on the
premises. No one was injured.
According to Pry, the most affected
Empire products will be the supply
of frozen poultry. In addition to
the main slaughter and processing
plant, the building also housed the
administrative offices. A safe with
back-up records appeared to be
intact, Pry said.

the state capital of Harrisburg.
There is another plant in nearby
Mount Union and the company
has already begun transferring some
employees from the main plant to
operate a second shift at Mount
Union. It is also believed that a
new addition to the main plant,
which was relatively undamaged
by the fire, will be back in operation
shortly.
Approximately l,000employees
are temporarily out of work due to
the fire. Empire is the major employer
of thesmall Mifflintown community.
Also affected are the merchants
and the poultry growers in the
surrounding area.
Early estimates of the damage
are between $15 million and $17
million. Pry said the plant was
insured, and construction will begin
as soon as practical on a new plant.
He believes the supply of fresh
poultry and deli items will not be
greatly affected by the loss.
M urray Katz heads up the Empire
concern, which was started by his
immigrant father, Joe Katz, almost
