Another refusnik arrested;
telegram campaign urged
Vladimir Lifshitz. 43-year old
mathematician from Leningrad, was
arrested on Jan. 8, allegedly for
“defaming the Soviet State," ac-
cordingto Howard Sachs, chairman
of the Atlanta Jewish Federation’s
Worldw ide Jewish Affairs subcom
mittee.
Sachs, David M inkin (chairman
of Federation’s C R C), J ack H orowitz
of the committee, and Noah Levine
of Federation staff heard about the
arrest at a meeting with three former
refusniks on Jan. 14 in Jerusalem,
during the Federation’s community
mission, Panim El Panim.
“We brought the news of this
arrest back to the participants of
the mission,” recounts Sachs, “and
the response of the I87 participants
was overw helming. Telegrams were
sent by each participant to General
Secretary Gorbachev and to the
procurators responsible for the trials.
The Israel Public Council for Soviet
Jewry coordinated the effort and
released a news report to the Israeli
press."
Copies of the telegrams are being
sent to the Georgia congressional
delegation, to the state senators, to
Secretary of State George Schultz
and to President Reagan.
“Now it is time for the entire
Atlanta Jewish community to act,”
says Sachs. This information was
distributed to the presidents of all
Jewish organizations and to all
area rabbis. “We encourage every
single Jew in our community to
send telegrams immediately,” con
tinues Sachs. “Through our efforts —
and those of others in the free
world we hope that Lifshitz will
be released.”
Telegrams can be ordered by
calling Western Union at 688-9870.
Address them to any of the following:
M ikhail Gorbachev/ General Secre
tary/The Kremlin/ Moscow/RSFSR,
USSR or Aleksandr Rekunkov/
Procurator General/ ul. Pushkinskaya
15-a/Moscow 103009/RSFSR,

USSR.
Messages should be succinct, such
as “We demand the immediate
release of Vladimir Lifshitz” or
“Free Vladimir Lifshitz. Allow him
to repatriate to Israel,” Sachs said.

Relations Committee of the Atlanta
