Birmingham, whose best-selling books include “Our Crowd,” “The Rest of Us” and “The Auerbach Will,” will discuss how he became interested in and involved with Jewish people, places and subjects in his writing. He is not Jewish. Stephen Birmingham was born in Hartford, Conn., and reared in the nearby town of Andover. He was educated at the Hotchkiss School and Williams College where in his junior year, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and with classmate Stephen Sondheim, co-edited the college magazine. A year of post graduate study at Oxford University, England, followed. After a two-yearstint in the U.S. Army, he joined the New York advertising agency of Doherty, Clifford, Steers & Shenfield (later Needham, Harper & Steers) as a copywriter, where he was responsible for the slogan “Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman” for Ladies’ Home Journal. He remained a consultant with the agency until 1970, when he left to devote his full time to serious writing. Thanks to you... it works... for ALL OF US United W^y Birmingham, also a popular figure on the American lecture circuit, says of his craft as a writer, “I write compulsively because I cannot stand to see a blank sheet of paper. I have to begin filling it up with words. I also write because I’m a kind of cripple. 1 can’t really do anything else. The most athletic thing I do is type, plus a little very cautious skiing.” After the program, there will be dessert reception and an autograph session. Birmingham’s latest novel, “The LeBaron Secret,” will be on sale at that time. Cost for the evening is $7. To make reservations, send check to The Temple, 1589 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Ga. 30367.
