He has been chosen unanimously by the nominating committee of the Atlanta District of the Zionist Organization of America to lead its officers, board and members to a revitalization of its presence throughout the area. Rabbi Ichay is known for his intense devotion to the nation, land and people of Israel and his ability to communicate to others the linkage between Israel and Jewish tradition. “I could never imagine being a Jew and not a Zionist,” he says. Born in Sousse, Tunisia, Rabbi Ichay left there in 1953 for rabbini cal studies and ordination in Eng land. His first position was as spir itual leader for those ot Spanish and Portuguese descent in Man chester, England. In 1967-68, he served as rabbi of both the Sephardic and gregations there. The Ichays’ son David was ho rn in 1969, the year they came to Congregation Or VeShalom. Rabbi Ichay’s involvement in Zionist activities began during his youth in Tunisia when he was active in aliyah. He was also active in Betar, and was a founder of Torah Vaavodah, the youth organ ization of Poale Mizrachi. He later served as a member of the hoard of the Central African Zionist Organ ization among other civic and communal groups. He visits Israel frequently w here, he says, there are more than 2,500 Ichays. This summer. Rabbi Ichay plans to lead an Atlanta ZOA tour to Israel. Guest speaker for the March 2 dinner where Rabbi Ichay, other officers and the board will be installed will be Rabbi Joseph Sternstein, former national presi dent of ZOA.
