Hello, Lev!
Etz Chaim telephones ‘adopted’ refusnik
I he members of the Soviet Jewry
Committee of Congregation Etz
Chaim met on Sunday morning,
Feb. 2, at the home of Steve and
Susan Berman. A prearranged phone
call to Russia was put through to
the Jewish refusnik family of Lev,
Inna and Karmi Elbert.
The Elberts have been adopted
by the congregation and had been
corresponding with several members
for over a year.
Following are excerpts of the
conversation:
Susan: Hello, Lev, this is Susan
Berman. How are you?
Lev: I am fine. How are you? Do
you get my letters?
Susan: Yes, we get all your letters.
Have you received our package with
the books? (Hebrew books sent
months ago)
Lev: No, 1 haven’t. I have gotten
many letters. 1 have not answered
for a long time because my father
has had a massive heart attack. He
is under critical care. He is some
what recuperated now.
Susan: I’m sorry to hear that but
am glad he is better... What can we
do for you? Can we send you
packages?
Lev: I have pushed an appeal
from our family to the 27th Con
gress of the Communist Party ask
ing the delegates to review our case
because we are waiting for 10 years,
to allow us to reunite our families in
Israel. However, those in charge of
permission it seems are waiting for
the natural death of the oldest
members of our family. My step
mother died in 1981 and my father
has been critically ill. He has suffered
four heart attacks. Inna’s mother is
also in Israel and is 70.
They are waiting for 10 years
already for us. It is difficult for
them. They have tried to work in
our behalf asking for permission for
us too.
Susan: What can we do for you?
Lev: Well, I don’t know. First
you can write petitions to people
like Mr. Gorbachev and contact
other officials. By the way, I would
like to give my best to Buddy
Darden, Wyche Fowler, and Mr.
Rawlings. They have been most
instrumental on my behalf.
Susan: Anybody else we can send
your regards to?
Lev: I cannot list all the members
of Congress!... Please express my
deepest gratitude to the members of
your Congregation because... 1 have
received a lot of letter's from many...
Susan: Did you get our Hanuka
cards with the pictures in them?
Lev: Yes, they arrived. I have
received them and the pictures of
the kids, too.
Susan: They were all handmade
by the children in the synagogue.
Lev: Karmi (his son) wants to
tell those kids that he sends his
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Mayor Eli Lan
dau of Herzliah has not actually put
up signs reading “detour—tax collec
tors ahead.” But he may as well
have, considering that motorists
driving through that town north of
Tel Aviv are being diverted around
roadblocks set up by tax collectors.
The income tax authorities estab
lished checkpoints on the main high
way through Herzliah in an effort
to apprehend tax evaders. Vehicles
are flagged down and the informa
tion on the driver’s license and regis
tration is compared by computer to
a list of tax delinquents. Motorists
found to be in default are issued a
summons on the spot with the threat
that their cars will be impounded if
they do not settle up promptly with
the government.
But the process created huge 1
traffic jams and landau ordered his
road maintenance crews to direct
drivers away from the roadblocks.
The tax authorities insist they are
legally allowed to take all necessary
measures to collect back taxes.
Landau maintains that he has an
equal right under the law to direct
traffic around obstructions, which
he identified, in this case, to be the
tax collectors’ roadblocks.

Mr. and Mrs. Lev Elbert
warmest regards and someday he
hopes he’ll be able to get in between
those kids on the pictures.
Susan: We do too, and I know
they feel the same way. We have a
real bond between us.
Lev: I’m deeply grateful to you.
It’s such a warm feeling to know
that you’re not alone in the midst of
winter. Do you understand?
Susan: Absolutely. And, you’re
not alone by any means. We wish
you the best and may G-d be with
you. Goodbye.
