—L’ Chaim- Continued from page 12. child was playing soccer right along with his brothers. Ezra, a IJ.JA tour guide, stated with pride, “My job of showing Israel is as important to me as if I was a famous spokesman.” Guide Shosi adds, “L’Chaim to me is to grasp life with your heart and soul.” Rabbi Arnold Goodman and Rabbi Alvin Sugarman doing the Hora, surrounded by singing and clapping mission participants repre senting all the synagogue congrega tions; the Federation staff lifted in chairs in praise of all they did to make our mission a perfect one; neighbors discovering neighbors; Friends rekindling friendships. Atlantans coming “face-to-face” with each other; “face-to-face” with themselves. A child of Holocaust survivors, sensitively describing what meant the most to him during his trip to Israel, said “Touching one of the trees planted in the JNF Martyr’s Forest as a memorial to those who perished in the Holocaust.” As he gazed over this enormous plentiful forest, this was his link to his past. Ironically enough, within one week I literally grew to love Israel. For someone who wasn’t going to go, I barely slept awaiting each day with enthusiasm and amazement. On our final day, without time to visit it, I was told about Lifeline. Poverty was everywhere when Lifeline for the Aged opened its First small workshop in 1962. Its founder, Myriam Mendilow, was called a ‘mad woman’ since she approached and tried to take the elderly and the handicapped off the streets. Today over 500 people attend workshops and create beautiful handicrafts sold in their gift shop. One elderly man, a Jordanian Jew who was blinded by being dragged in the desert sand, was brought to Lifeline. He refused to be involved. Myriam lovingly encouraged him and taught Thoughts on the Holocaust Pearlann Horowitz (right), coordinator of the Atlanta Jewish Federation Women’s Covenant Division, introduces Barbara Lebow, playwright-in-residence at the Academy Theatre. Ms. Lebow, author of “A Shayna Maidel,” shared her feelings about the Holocaust at a recent luncheon hosted by Jill Segal. Campaign pledges made at the event marked an 18.6 percent increase. The Women’s Division has raised $818,000 toward its $1.3 million goal for the 1986 Campaign. Renee Cobb and Susan Schoenbaum chair the Covenant Division. A bright idea from Pella Expand your horizon. With not enough time to visit Lifeline and only moments left in Israel, 1 made our tour guide promise to send other tourists there in my place. Day to day the faces of Israel changed, but the “lifeline” between us as Jews remains a link within the heart that cannot be unnoticed or broken. Israel, the land of the unsung hero, signifies L’Chaim. As the Israeli minister of agriculture explained, “In Israel the difference between the possible and the impos sible is that the impossible just takes a little longer.” It might take each of us a little longer to get there, but once you do, you’ll never be able to stay away. When our plane hit the runway and safely landed back in the United States, an elderly Hassid who had davened and prayed throughout the trip, exclaimed to my surprise, “L’Chaim!” We had reached home safely and—coincidence or not— my story had found its ending. So with much love and admiration for our counterparts who need us as much as we need them... To Israel... To Life. . . L’Chaim!
