Prof. Haim Beinart. Bernard
Cherrick Professor of Jewish
History at the Hebrew University,
has been named the first winner of
the international “Three-Culture
Prize” awarded by the City of
Cordoba, Spain.
The prize was created by
Cordoba to call attention to its
past role as a center for Judaism.
Christianity and Islam. Beinart is a
world-renowned historian of the
lews of Spain and the Marranos.

Joan Peters, author of the best
seller “From Time Immemorial."
historian and investigative re
porter specializing in socio-poli
tical and foreign policy issues,
discussed her latest book at the
Jewish Educational Alliance in
Savannah as the second speaker on
the 1985-86 Jewish Cultural Arts
Series, sponsored by and held at
the JEA.
Joan Peters has specialized in
the Arab-lsraeli conflict for more
than a decade.

Mark E. Silverman, M.D.,of
Atlanta was a recipient of one of
the first annual Governor’s
Awards in the Humanities at a
public ceremony held recently. The
award recognizes exemplary
achievements which have fostered
an understanding of Georgia’s
cultural traditions and values.
Silverman was selected for his
leadership in founding the Atlanta
Medical Historical Society and for
his role in stimulating creative
writing at Emory University
Medical School and Morehouse
College of Medicine.
The Bar Mitzva of Joel
Richard Murovitz of Atlanta
will take place at 10:30 a.m.
Saturday, March 8. at The
Temple. A congregational
kiddush will follow.
Joel is the son of Barbara and
Mark Murovitz. Grandparents
are Sophie Murovitz and Ruth
and Milton Caplan. all of
Charleston. W. Vir.
Joel, a seventh grader at the
Hebrew Academy, will share
his Bar Mitzva with Arthur
Finkelshtein of Chernovtsy.

Rabbi Donald Tam of Atlanta,
spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-
El. recently spoke at the first in a
series of Jean E. Mopper Living
Memorial programs at Temple
Mickve Israel in Savannah.
His topic was “Seeking God —
Finding Faith."
Tam is a graduate of the
University of Florida, where he
studied history and Hebrew
Letters. He was ordained in 1973 at
Hebrew Union College. He is a
member of the Atlanta Rabbinical
Association and serves on the
boards of the Jewish National
Fund and the Epstein School.

Zmira Goodman of New Yors
City has been appointed executive
director of Hadassah, the
Women’s Zionist Organization of
America.
Mrs. Goodman served from
1970 until recently as vice pres
ident of Colonial Penn Group. She
also served as president of the
Leonard and Sophie Davis
Foundation, a major contributor
to educational projects in the
United States and Israel.
She was special assistant to the
president of Brandeis University
and was previously consultant to
the president of the Sate University
of New York on foreign programs.
She was also acting director of the
foreign student department of the
Institute of International Educa
tion and was director of program
development of the National
Council of Jewish Women.
From 1957 to 1960 Mrs.
Goodman was or. staff of the office
of Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion in Jerusalem.
The Bar Mitzva of Mitchell
Adam Barocas ot Atlanta will take
place at 8:45 a.m.. Saturday.

Mitchell is the son ol Maxine
and Ervin Barocas. Grandparents

Mrs. Anthony (Jackie) Montag
has been elected president of the
USO Council of Greater Atlanta
Inc., a United Way Agency. She
will be installed at the USO annual
meeting and dinner March 14. at
the Zodiac Room of Neiman-
Marcus.
Ms. Montag will preside over
the 75-member board which
establishes policy and raises funds
for the two USO centers serving
military and military families in
Atlanta. USO assisted over
100.000 individuals in 1985.
Serving with Mrs. Montag on
the USO Council are Bernard W.
Abrams. Richard A. Guthman Jr..
Irving B. Schoenberg and Dr.
Marvin Goldstein, who is a charter
member of the council.
Dr. Harold Black, Savannah
dentist, is the subject of an article
in "The Robb Report,” a national
publication, which deals with an
innovated procedure in the field of
dentistry', one-day restorative dentistry.
The procedure provides a
v ariety of dental therapies, such as
crowns, capping, implants, and perio
dontal work in one sitting, rather
than having the therapies prov ided
over a period of weeks or months.
Myron and Merle Smith of
Atlanta announce the birth of a
son. Eric Freidin, on Feb. 8.
Grandparents are Anne B.
Smith of Atlanta and the late
Morris Smith, and Alex Freidin of
Miami Beach and the late Ethel
Freidin.
Eric was given the Hebrew name
Eton in memory of his maternal
