Goldstein has an eye for sports
by Carolyn Gold
If the game doesn't go into
overtime or if the end of the
tournament isn't preempted by the
news, the TV viewer may catch a
credit which reads "Marc
Goldstein cameraman "
MarcGoldsteinhas turneda love
of sports and an interest in
photography into an unusual and
adventurous career. He is a free
lance television cameraman who
does most of his work covering
sports and 85 percent of this away
from Atlanta.
He covers golf, tennis, skiing,
swimming and diving champ
ionships as well as pro and college
football and basketball games and
major league baseball. His travels
have taken him to 35 states,
including Hawaii, to Canada,
Mexico, and to countries in South
America and the Orient.
Marc became interested in
communications at the University
of Denver and later received a
communications degree from
Georgia State. Part of his school
work included an internship.
Because he is a self-described
"sports fanatic,” he chose to work
at Channel 17, Ted Turner’s
WTCG as it was called 10 years
ago. The station, now WTBS,
offered him a job after he
completed his requirements as an
unpaid intern.
For the next three years he did
camera work for WTBS covering
sports, which often was contracted
out for all the networks. Marc did
college football. Falcon’s football,
and many Monday night
baseball games.
TV C ameraman Marc Goldstein
Since becoming a free-lance
technician, he has worked for all
three major networks — CBS,
ABC and NBC — for ESPN,
cable’s total sports network, and
for WTBS and CNN. His resume
reads like a TV guide of major
events: the Super Bowl, World
Cup Skiing, World Championship
of Swimming and Diving, the Sun
Bowl, the Dixie 500 Stock Car
Race, the U.S. Open Golf Tournament,
among others.
Marc thinks college basketball is
the best spectator sport, but his
favorite sport to work is golf. His
explanation is, “The scenery is
beautiful; l get to stay five days to a
week; and the job is the most
challenging. It’s not easy as a
cameraman to follow a small white
ball in the sky.”
Another difficult job is one he
just completed, a professional
figure skating championship. “In
hockey you pretty much know
the skaters will be going toward
one goal or the other, but in figure
skating you can’t guess the
direction. They skate at high speed
and the rinks often have low light
levels. Staying in focus is a
problem.”
Photographing the action of
skiing is easy, says this cam
eraman, an avid skier himself.
“The elements are what make it
hard. There can be unexpected
blizzards. You might be 13,000 feet
up the mountain and have to wait
for hours in extreme cold only to
have the event cancelled due to the
weather.” Marc has covered World
Cup Skiing for four years for CBS
from Aspen and for NBC from
Vail.
Most sports events are handled
by remote units or TV studios on
wheels. These are S4-S5 million
trucks which are equipped with
cameras, tape machines, cables
and monitors for the director.
Each cameraman is connected to
the director with a headset. “We
are his eyes and we are trying to sell
shots to the director in the truck.”
