Hanaton founder describes
first Conservative kibbutz
by Eli Havivi
Picture a barren, rocky hillside,
winds whipping around its curves,
the muzzein’s call echoing in the
distance. Now visualize a compact
living area bustling with activity
from sunrise through the wee
hours; tractors moving across
surrounding fields, vehicles
bringing mail, contractors,
architects, advisors, tourists.
Imagine the sounds: The bleats
and coughs of sheep, the pounding
of nails, the shouts of children
playing outdoors, kibbutz
Hanaton continues to progress
further and further away from its
former status as a desolate hill in
the Bet Netofa Valley in the
Lower Gallilee. It is now a vibrant
community of 53 adults and 15
children.
Garin Nitzan Gimel (the third
group from the United States) and
Garin Nativ (from Israel) are
already undergoing hachshara
(training) at Kubbutz Kfar
Hachoresh. assuring the continu
ing growth of our population.
B'shaah tova. three more
children will join our community
by April, so that together with the
children of Shlav Gimel from the
third group), our youngsters will
number 30 by September.
Despite the difficult economic
situation in the country, Hanaton
continues to develop. Twelve new
houses will soon be completed.
One hundred sixty-five sheep
arrived to open our newest
branch—the sheep pen (for milk)
which overlooks our homes, the
reservoir and the length of the Bet
Netofa valley.

Our 15 children continue to
flourish under the care of their
parents metapelet (day care
worker) and many adult friends.
Five attend primary school at
kibbutz Lavi, four are in pre
school (gan). and four are toddlers.
A new baby house will be open in
February. The quality of life for
our children remains a priority. A
certified ganenet (kindergarten
teacher) was hired to run the gan
while one of our members studies
for certification at Oranim
Teacher Training Institute. Our
metapelot not only care for the
children during the day, but also
play with them at dinner hold them
on laps for television and meetings
and help them follow Shabbat
services.
The educational center is be
ginning to develop as a full-fledged
branch of work. Tour buses visit
weekly and sometimes daily.
Various packages of tours, meals,
discussion and study are offered to
adults and children. We look
forward to once again receiving the
United Synagogue Youth Pilgrim
age and Ramah Seminar groups
this summer, and to expand our
program to include day-trips
guided by members of Hanaton.
In the meantime, we are able to
receive smaller groups of students
for several days at a time, pro
viding an intensive program of
work and study—a chance to
“experience" Hanaton and learn
what it means to live in an
observant Conservative commu
nity on a kibbutz.
The last year and a half has been
busy, and Hanaton has rapidly
developed into an accepted com
munity of the Galil (five miles from
Nazareth and 15 miles from Haifa).
We are still growing and the
challenge of building remains. We
are still actively looking for
committed singles and families to
join us in our efforts.
