Waldheim: Membership
in Hitler’s SA news to me
by Joseph Polakoff
TSI's Washington Correspondent
WASHINGTON-Kurt Wald
heim, secretary general of the Uni
ted Nationsfrom 19721o I982,has
been identified by documents in
Vienna as having been a member
of two Nazi organizations includ
ing Hitler’s infamous security
troops, according to the New York
Times and the newsweekly Profil
in Austria.
The Times said Waldheim was
attached to a German army com
mand in World War 11 that fought
brutal campaigns against Yugo
slav partisans and which deported
Greek Jews. It said the documents
were found among German mil
itary records and in the archives oi
the Austrian Justice Ministry and
the Foreign Ministry. Austria was
part of Nazi Germany from 1938 to
the end of the war in 1945.
Waldheim is a candidate for the
Austrian presidency and is consi
dered to be leading with the elec
tion two months away, on May 5.
He was reported saying his oppo-

about the war years to damage him
politically.
According to the Times, Wald
heim acknowledged he had served
m a Nazi student union at the Con
sular Academy in Vienna in 1938
and remained a member until he
entered military service on Aug.
15 1939. He was quoted as saying
that he did not realize he had been
enrolled in the SA. Hitler’s brown-
shirted security troops. The SA
was later superseded by the SS as
Hitler’s police.
Profil published a photo of a
recently declassified document
that identified Waldheim as a
member of the S A and the student
group. The New York Times car
ried a photo of Waldheim on May
22, 1943, at the airstrip at Podgor
ica, Yugoslavia, now Titograd.
With him were an Italian com
mander and two German officers,
one being the commander of the
Seventh SS Volunteer Division.
Edgar Bronfman, president of
the World Jewish Congress, issued
a statement in New York that
accused Waldheim with “one of
the most elaborate deceptions of
our time.” Bronfman said it was
“inconceivable that Waldheim
would have been elected U.N.
secretary general had the lacts
been known.”
“Although Mr. Waldheim
writes in his autobiography that he
studied law in Vienna during this
period—‘it was impossible to leave
Austria,’ he writes, ‘the borders

have been closed’—he in fact con
tinued his military service under
Gen. Lohr in the Balkans until the
end of the war,” the Times re
ported.
Gerald Reitlinger, a historian of
the Holocaust and author of the
book “The Final Solution,” said
Gen. Lohr was “perhaps more
implicated in Jewish deportation
than any other Wehrmacht com
mander.” Witnesses described how
dozens of German army trains left
Salonika day after day bearing
Jews to their deaths in extermina
tion camps, the Times said.
Waldheim wrote Rep. Stephen
Solarz (D—N.Y.) in Nov. 1980
that “I was never associated in any
way with the Nazi youth move
ment,” and that he had served
with a reconnaissance unit in an
Austrian army division in 1941. He
said he was wounded on the east
ern front and resumed his law stu
dies at Vienna University where he
was graduated in 1944.
Solarz is in the Philippines this
week, according to an aide. When
he returns to Washington he will
take up the case again, the aide
indicated. Solarz wrote Waldheim
in 1980 after allegations appeared
about him in the New Republic
magazine.
The Central Intelligence Agency
told Solarz at the time, “We believe
that Waldheim was not a member
of the Nazi youth movement, nor
was he involved in anti-Jewish
activities.” The CIA letter, from
Fredrick Hitz, the CIA’s legislative
counsel, said that Waldheim s ser
vice with Austria’s 45th infantry
division ended in 1941 when he
received a leg wound. His recuper
ation, the CIA said, required
almost a year. “He was dis
charged,” the CIA said, “from mil
itary duties following his recovery
and returned to study law in
Vienna.”
