Residential Commercial ■■■■■I Suzanne Engel (404)393-3831 The establishment of a perman ent Holocaust Exhibit and Re source Center in Atlanta is cur rently underway, thanks to the efforts of the Zachor Committee of the Atlanta Jewish Federation, Hemshech and the Children of Survivors. Construction of the Center, to be located at the Atlanta Jewish Community Center, has begun and will be completed in time for a May 4 opening. A major impetus for creating the permanent exhibit was the extra ordinary response of the Jew'ish and non-Jewish communities to “The Message of Yad Vashem” exhibit at Israel EXPO’85, accord ing to Elliot Cohen, chairman ol Zachor. The unique focus of the Holo caust Center will be a celebration of the survivors who reside in Atlanta. The center is being established to help preserve the memory of the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, and the history of the 4,500 European Jewish communi ties destroyed during World War II. It will illustrate the story and scope of the Holocaust as w'ell as the richness ol Jewish cultural, social and religious life in pre- Holocaust Europe. Outreach programming, through the Bureau of Jewish Education, will include a travelling exhibit, a Speaker’s Bureau and scholarly research. The Resource Center will also serve as an educational tool, teach ing the human rights lessons neces sary to prevent another Holocaust from happening. Initial fundingfor the Holocaust Elliott Cohen, chairman of the Zachor Committee of the Atlanta Jewish Federation, checks the progress of constructing Zachor Holo caust Center with steering Committee members Saba Silverman (center) and Rosanne Zinn. Center came from the Federation's Endowment Fund. Current plans call for the center to be staffed by volunteers, Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.; Mondays-Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 4p.m. It will be open in the evening by appointment. The opening of the Zachor Holocaust Center of the Atlanta Jewish Federation is scheduled to coincide with a series of events planned to commemorate Yom Hashoa May 4-May 11.
