no place in our society."
Representing the Leo M. Frank
Lodge of B’nai B’rith, Alan B.
Ulman. president, said, “Three
years ago, a group of young Jew ish
men formed a new B’nai B’rith
lodge. As we searched for a direc
tion and an identity, the State of
Georgia Board of Pardons and
Paroles denied a posthumous par
don to Leo M. Frank.
“For us, this provided the moti
vation to name our lodge after Leo
M. Frank." He said, “We congrat
ulate the board on this decision.
We feel it is long overdue, but
courageous nevertheless.” He
called this week’s action “a positive
step in correcting an unjust
ruling.”
In a statement released later, Lee
Furman, Atlanta Chapter coordi
nator of the American Jewish
Congress, also commended the
action of the board, which she
called “long overdue,” adding that
“This belated recognition of the
role that anti-Semitism played in
preventing a fair trial for Leo
Frank in no way can make recom
pense for the ordeal which Frank
endured.” She said, “A serious
flaw in the history of Georgia jus
tice has been remedied.”
But it was Sonny Kunian who
best addressed the issue of the 73-
year time span that intervened
between Frank’s conviction and
his pardon: “We have been around
for 3,000 years,” he said. “We’re
used to patience.”
