Guest chaplains implore House
to voice support of Soviet Jewry
Anatoly Shcharansky, the plight
of Soviet Jewry, and the impor
tance to strive for basic human
rights was the theme of an invoca
tion to the Georgia House of
Representatives by Gene Eidel
man. when he served as guest
chaplain for the House. Cathey
Steinberg made the arrangements
for Eidelman and Cantor Isaac
Goodfriend to serve as guest
chaplains.
In his remarks Eidelman. him
self an emigrant from the Soviet
Union, referred to Shcharansky’s
recent release from a Soviet prison
as a miracle. “But we all should
realize that the freedom that now is
Anatoly Shcharansky’s most pre
cious gift also came as a result of
determination, conviction and
strength of all advocates—Jews
and non-Jews—who spent these
many years struggling to attain his
freedom,” he said. “The work that
you do is extremely important,”
continued Eidelman. “Ideals that
you cherish and the collective voice
that you can raise on behalf of
freedom are clearly heard thou-

Israel’s Purim fortress
Adapted from the works ol Rabbi Menachem M
Schneerson. the 1 ubavitcher Rebbe. by Rabbi
Yossi New. Chabad ol Georgia
Although both Mordechai and
Esther were instrumental in the G-d-
ly deliverance and miracle ol
Purim. nonetheless the Megilla
(Purim scroll) is not called “The
Scroll of Mordechai.” nor “The
Scroll of Mordechai and Esther,”
it is called “The Scroll of Esther."
( Megillat Esther). In this manner
the Torah underscores the vital
role of the Jewish woman, not only
in connection with Purim, but in
all difficult and critical times,
including our own era.
In this country and in this age
Haman has a different appearance
than in the time of Mordechai and
Esther. But he is essentially the
same ancient Amalek whose desire
to cool off Israel’s enthusiasm for
Torah, to drive a wedge between
the Jew and mitzvot. Amalek
ancient and modern—wants us to
acknowledge his false god, to bend
the knee before his idol. “Idolatry ’
in Hebrew is AvoJa-Zara, literally,
“alien worship.” Amalek s aim is to
persuade us to acknowledge and
bow down to everything which is
alien and strange to the spirit and
lifestyle of Judaism.
The only way to overpower
Rabbi Schneerson
today’s Haman with his idolatry is
by using the ancient tried-and-
tested approach of strengthening
the pure and sacred Torah-ed-
ucation of our young, an approach
which was totally effective in frus
trating the evil intentions of the
original Haman. In practical terms
this means that we must enlarge
veshivot and other institutions
where Torah is studied in an
atmosphere of Yiras Shamayim
(fear-of-G-d) and where young
children are imbued with an un
bounded love for Torah and mitz
vot to the point of self-sacrifice, as
in the time of Mordechai and
Esther in the capital city of
Shushan.
That the Purim Scroll bears
Esther’s name alone, underscores
an important fact: In all fateful
times for Israel the responsibility
(and, correspondingly, the merit)
of the Jewish woman is not “sec
ond-rate,” G-d forbid. On the con
trary, it is as great as—and in some
ways greater than—the responsi
bility and merit of her husband.

Cantor Goodfriend read an in
vocation and concluded the service
with “Yehi Ratzon.” “We are most
appreciative of the efforts of Rep.
Steinberg, Gene Eidelman and
Cantor Goodfriend to heighten the
awareness of House members re
garding the need to remain active
on behalf of Soviet Jewry,” said
Howard Sachs, chairman of the
Federation’s Worldwide Jewish
Affairs Committee.
Jewish organizations in Atlanta
are keeping the plight of Soviet
Jewry in the forefront by lighting
candles to the memory of Soviet
refusniks at all meetings.
