Grimness, bleak future, preparing oneself to die, subsisting on bread crumbs and inferior food, doing without necessities, subjugation, imposed feeling of inferioi ity, no ego nor id allowed to be asserted, sickness, submission, a majority of Jews who speak Yiddish and know tra ditional Jewish sources and love Judaism. What a contrast! Can the aver age Jew of today (who was not a victim of the Holocaust) begin to comprehend what it was like to be trapped in the web of the Nazi net? To be brutally assaulted in a crimi nal way just because one happens to be Jewish? To be separated in a brutal and painful way—from brother, sister, parent, child at the arrival of an infamous concentra tion camp like Auschwitz or Bergen-Belsen? Rarely has a book or work on the Holocaust reflected this world in its totality. Such a book, how ever, is “Worlds Torn Asunder.” This is due in large measure to the fact that the author writes from the standpoint ot a religious, obser vant Jew who enumerates inci dents where religious Jews attemp ted to uphold the traditions and rituals even under the most horri ble circumstances. We all know about the Holo caust. Some of us know more than others. This particular book will cause us to reflect on what we know, and it will make our appre ciation of the survivors’ ordeals more acute. In my opinion, every mature Jew should read and own this book, in order to fulfill the impor tant Mitzva of Zachor Mo She- asah L'kha Amalek (Remember what the Amalekites/Nazis did to you as a people). Rabbi Edelstein is to be strongly commended for his arduous efforts in putting into words what he experienced as a testament to our generation in ful filling the scriptural dictum K’tov Zikaron Basefer (preserving what the Amalekites did to us for the future generations).
