The Variety That is The Center
When we made arrangements with The Southern
Israelite to begin the half page of Center news called
CenterSpot, it was our purpose to pull together in one
place all the upcoming events that would be of interest to
the community.
Every Monday I ask staff to give me the articles that>
they would like to include in this column so that they
would appear in one part of The Southern Israelite rather
than scattered here and there. At this time of the year
there is so much going on at the Center that it is virtually
impossible to do all our upcoming programming in this
half page. The variety and quantity of Special Events pro
gramming taking place at this time of the year provides a
picture of the dynamic nature of this agency’s service to
the community.
In just the next few weeks there will be Special Events
dealing with Yiddish, Hebrew, theater, parties, singles
activities, Purim, education, Passover, trips and fitness.
What a variety!
The Sound of Yinglish
There is a new sound in the halls of Peachtree in the
evening. Your ears may perk up as you hear melodies
from your childhood or phrases from your past. You
have not entered a time warp but are witnessing a revival
of Yiddish culture in the form of our own Yinglish Thea
tre Group. This novel theater group will be offering its
first production, “Have I Got A Story For You,” which is
made of vignettes based on experiences of some of our
own Center members who disembarked at Ellis Island,
interlaced with familiar Yiddish songs. The production is
under the direction of Beverly Schmerling from the Cen
ter and the musical direction is by Ira Wajsman from a
script by Scott Orlin, a talented Atlanta playwright.
This production will take place Saturday, April 5 at 8*
p.m. and Sunday, April 6, at 3 p.m. So mark you calend
ars now.
We have just completed our first six-week session of
Israeli Sing-A-Long which featured learning and singing
popular and traditional Israeli songs. This program was
so successful that the group decided to continue and
reach out to new participants. The first session of the
second semester will begin Monday, March 31, at 7:30
p. m. at the Peachtree facility. Our musical director will be
Joseph Meshulem who hails from our sister city of Yehud
and who is completing his Ph.D. in education in Atlanta.
So if you love to sing Israeli songs with a wonderfully
friendly group of people, come down to the Center on
Monday. For more information, call Itzhak Sordo or
Chana Shapiro at 875-7881.

Another first at the AJCC will be a Senior Purim

held by the Center for its senior adult members and will
feature live music from the '20s and ’30s, a costume
contest and refreshments. The fee is $3. The Center is
looking for dancing partners to join in the fun. Don’t miss
the party. Cali for reservations at the AJCC/Peachtree,
875-7881, Ext. 21.
