NCJW plans forum, awards in memory of Roz Cohen To honor the memory of Roz Cohen, the National Council ot Jewish Women will hold its first Roz Penso Cohen Memorial Forum. I he event w ill take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday. April 14. at the Atlanta Historical Society. McEl- reath Hall. 3101 Andrews Drive. During the program, the Roz Penso Cohen Community Action Award will be presented to I'.S. Congressman Wyche Fowler. The award was established to recognize individuals who exemplify Mrs. Cohen's dedication to community ser\ ice. The Roz Penso Cohen Comm unity Action Grant, established to support programs that serve a com munity need, will be presented to the Louis Kahn Group Home for the Elderly. Ann Wilson Cramer will be the featured speaker at the forum. Ms. Cramer served as president of the Junior League at the same time Roz Cohen was president of NCJW. She is presently section chief of the Community Develop ment Section. Georgia Depart ment ot Community Affairs. She was 1983 Georgia Volunteer of the Year and in 1984 was chosen by the YWCA as an Outstanding Woman ot Achievement. Rosalind Penso Cohen died April 26. 1984. at age 39. A na tive Atlantan she was an honor graduate of Grady High School, and a Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University. A dedicated volunteer, Wyche Fowler she served on the board of Senior Citizens Services and was influen tial in establishing the Louis Kahn Group Home. She was a past president of the Atlanta Section. National Council of Jewish Women and was vice president of NCJW’s Southern District at the time of her death She was in Leadership Atlanta's class of 1981-82 and was named one ot the Ten Outstanding Young Women in Atlanta in 1980. Roz Cohen participated in the Atlanta Jewish Federation’s first Young Leadership Mission to Is rael and was chosen for the Irving Goldstein Young Leadership En richment Program. She was a reci pient of the Barbara Lipshutz Award of the National Council of Jewish Women and was on the board of the Epstein School. She served as coordinator of Wych Fow ler’s campaign for president of the Atlanta City Council. An outpouring of tributes fol lowed the news of Roz Cohen's death. At her funeral. Rabbi S. Robert Ichay of Congregation Or VeShalom, w here Roz was a mem ber. said, in part: “...Roz was truly a loving, caring, devoted wile, mother, daughter, sister and above all, a true friend—not just to her family but to anyone who had the honor and privilege to be asso ciated with her....” Ben Johnson wrote in the Atlanta Journal/Constitution. “...Roz Cohen looked death and life in the eye—joyously and cour ageously. She did not seek to be consoled, but to console. ...It must be said—for the mother w ho raised her. tor the husband who cherished her, tor three young sons who may hot read it for years, for friends who need the reassurance ot hav ing it said. She was our best." Sherry Frank, area director ot the American Jewish Committee, wrote: “She was a free spirit and a champion of many causes. She crossed religious and racial barri ers. and was dedicated to citizen advocacy and protecting the dem ocratic process.
