Speaking of politics...
U.S. Rep. Newt Gingrich (right) was the guest speaker at an
informal breakfast meeting at the Atlanta Jewish Federation last
week. The session was part of an ongoing series of meetings with
Georgia’s elected officials, sponsored by the Georgia Israel Public
Awareness Network (GIPAN). According to GIPAN chairman,
A. I. Robinson (left), Rep. Buddy Darden is slated to speak at the
next breakfast session, Monday, April 14, at 8 a.m.

Shultz tries diplomacy
at funeral in Sweden
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Secre
tary ol State George Shultz at
tempted some conciliatory diplo
macy between Israel, a sworn Arab
enemy of Israel, and the Soviet
Union with mixed results—at
the funeral in Stockholm last Sat
urday of Prime Minister Olof
Palme of Sweden.
Prime Minister Shimon Peres
related the events to the Cabinet
Sunday, which included a “meet
ing" with Talib Ibrahimi, the for
eign minister of Algeria.
Peres said he was greeted by
Shultz in the building where world
leaders attending the funeral were
housed. Shultz, invited Peres into
his suite where he discovered that
the secretary had a guest—Ibra
himi. He said the Algerian diplo
mat seemed extremely embar
rassed when Shultz introduced
them and encouraged them to
shake hands. The Algerian foreign
ministerypromptly denied any
handshake with the prime minister
of the “Zionist entity.”
Peres told the Cabinet that
Shultz and former West German
Chancellor Willy Brandt, chair
man of the Socialist International,
both tried to arrange a meeting
between him and Andrei Gromyko
who was also attending the fun
eral. But the Russians declined,
saying there was not enough time
for such a meeting, Peres said.
