Hamantashen With A Secret Ingredient After Haman was defeated in his wicked plot against the Jews, Mordecai told the Jews to “make Purim days as days of feasting (eating good meals) and gladness, and of sending por tions (gifts) to one another and gifts to the poor.” That is the reason we share our happiness with others on Purim. We not only give to the poor, but also to our friends and relatives. This is called mishloach manot. Everyone should send a gift to at least two people. The gifts are supposed to be food or drinks, and could include hamantashen, cookies, candies, and fruit. In addition to your gifts, send secret messages in homemade “hamantashen” to all your friends and family this year. What You Need: construction paper pencil scissors paper tape or glue wrapped candy What You Do: 1. Draw or trace a circle (about 4 inches wide) on the construc tion paper. 2. Cut out the circle. 3. Cut out a strip of paper and write a secret message on it. Here are some examples: Don’t eat too many hamantashen! I love you! See you at synagogue tonight - guess who! 4. Take the strip and roll it up so that the end can stick out of your paper “hamantash”. 5. Fold up the edges of the circle in the shape of a hamantash. 6. Put in a couple of pieces of wrapped candy and your mes sage. 7. Tape or glue the edges of the “hamantash” together. 8. Deliver vour mishloach manot to a friend! A Popular Costume In Israel In Israel two years ago all the children dressed like cowboys and clowns on Purim. Last year a new costume was the most popular choice - Dordaism. What’s Dordaism? In the United States and Canada they are called Smurfs! That’s right, those funny blue-faced little creatures are very popular in Israel. They are the stars of the Dordaism tele vision show, replacing Wonder Woman as the most popular tele vision personality. In fact, Dordaism is so popular that Israel’s Television Minister changed the time of the program to begin after Shabbat ended so religious fans could see it! This Purim, forget about Esther and Haman costumes! Dress like a Smurf and you’ll feel at home in any Israeli Purim parade! PAGE 29 THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE March 21, 1986
