his mentally ill father will not sign
the emigration papers; and he told
of Ida Nudel, who has been refused
because her closest living relative
(her sister in Israel) is not a relation
of the “first degree.”
At noon we were bussed to Cap
itol Hill; there each state group had
a chance to caucus and to go over
strategy, the Georgia group was
composed of the six of us plus
Rebecca Gris, Julie Rosenfeld, and
Ronnie Minsk, who came down
from Barnard and New York Uni
versity, respectively. Debbie
Blumenthal and 1 led our caucus,
assigning people various topics so
each could specialize in a different
issue of the lobby.
Our first meeting was at 2 with
Sen. Sam Nunn. T here was a slight
mix-up of schedules and we were
not on the senator’s calendar, but
we did meet with one of his aides.
Debbie introduced the group and
told a little about the lobby; Julie
inquired whether the senator was
keeping in touch with his adopted
refusnik; Avi asked that the sena
tor bring up the issue of Soviet
Jewry when he attends the Hel
sinki Final Act review in April in
Berne; I asked that the senator sign
all the “Dear Colleague” letters
that come to him in support of
Soviet Jews. The aide was recep
tive, but as we had learned that
morning, few members of Congress
are against this issue; the key is to
keep reminding our elected offi
cials to act—and to keep thanking
them when they do so. After our
meeting. Sen. Nunn’s secretary apo
logized for the confusion and let us
browse about the senator’s office.

encouraging us to relax in the
senator’s chair (only Avi was per
suaded to do this).
Our next appointment was with
Sen. Mattingly. Though we were
kept waiting for a while, the sena
tor personally met with us for half
an hour in a private conference
room. Ronnie brought up the issue
of quid pro quo, with particular
reference to a bill now in Congress
which would permit Soviet fur
trade in the United States; and Lisa
made the senator aware of the fact
that Radio Liberty, sponsored by
the United States and beamed into
the Soviet Union, is discriminating
against Russian Jews (by provid
ing them with only a seventh of the
programming provided for other
Soviet minorities of equal size).
I asked the senator if he had
visited Russia, since this is very
effective in gaining the release of
adopted refusniks; the senator said
that he hadn’t yet, deciding that it
was better to go to Israel first (he
went last year and Lenore recalled
to him that she had seen him at
Yehud).
We were late for our appoint
ment with Rep. Swindall, and so
we met with an aide. (Debbie,
however, did have a very successful
meeting with her congressman,
Newt Gingrich.) We went over the
key issues, and Leonore asked that
Rep. Swindall support the reso
lution now in the House which
would give the Shcharanskys the
Congressional gold medal.
After our meeting we rende-
voused with the other students at
the reflecting pool in front of the
Capitol. Carolyn, Lisa Zied, and
Karen N'adier had productive lob
bying experiences in their respec
tive Maryland, Ohio, and Florida
congressmen’s offices; Valerie and
Maura met with equal success
from New York. Maura even took
the time to do two “drop-offs:"
dropping in to congressmen’s offi
ces for whom there were no student
constituents.
Back at Adas Israel we prepared
our supper (eating it in the van),
and left at 6:30 p.m. What can I say
about that drive back? It was
rough. There was some snow at
first, and a small boo-boo was
committed which cost us 40 miles.
But we hung in there, thanks in
part to the non-stop kibbitzing of
Jared and Avi. Maura was spec
tacular, driving from 12:30 a.m.
until our arrival back in Atlanta at
7. Yes, we were exhausted at that
point, but looking back on it, that
sleep that we did without, those
classes that we missed and that
extra work which we had to do to
catch up don’t seem so important.
We did something for our brothers
and sisters in the Soviet Union;
and not only that, we were
energized to do more. Now, let’s all
get to it!
s- El Al has plan to recoup losses
TEL AVIV (JTA)—El Al, Israel’s national airline, has come up
with a way to recoup part of the severe losses it has sustained since a
ban on Sabbath flights was imposed by the government several
years ago under intense pressure from the Orthodox religious
establishment.
Rafi Har-Lev, president of El Al, has proposed leasing its
Boeing 747s from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday to charter
companies not affected by the ban. Saturday is the favored day of
the week for many European tourists to start their vacations. The
enforced idleness of the giant aircraft means that traffic is lost to El
