Atlanta marcher for peace
reflects on nuclear menace
The march against nuclear wea
pons, which began last month with
much excitement and anticipation,
quickly hogged down in insurance
and other financial problems, forc
ing the original organizers to bow
out. Many of the marchers, how
ever, are determined to continue,
and under the new name, The
Great Peace March for Nuclear
Disarmament, hope to complete
the 3,235 mile march as a highly
visible expression of their concerns
for the world. One of those is Lewis
Franco of Atlanta, son of Dr.
Richard and Phyllis Franco. The
following open letter expresses his
views. —Editor.
Dear Friend,
I am sitting in a booth in a
Coco’s restaurant, enjoying the lux
ury of someone serving me coftee.
Living out of a tent for the past
month has made me realize how
many things 1 usually take for
granted. The Great Peace March
for Nuclear Disarmament is camped
less than a mile from here in Bar-
stow, Calif. As attached as I am to
the March, it’s great to get away
for an evening, to reflect on what is
happening, and to be able to write
a letter with the benefit of that
incredible phenomenon, electri
city.
As you may have heard. Pro-
Peace, our founding organization,
has collapsed financially. Their fi
nancial problems were the reason
for us staying camped in the desert
outside Barstow for almost a week.
When we learned of the collapse on
Saturday, we began to organize
our own governmental structure.

and take responsibility for the
march. As marchers, we have re
mained unified (about 500 of us) in
our desire to continue our cross
country march for global nuclear
disarmament.
W'e are in a stage of regrouping,
finding out what we need to con
tinue safely. and mobilizing people
who want to help us. Presently, we
are educating and empowering the
community we are in. and we plan
to do this throughout our march.
The town of Barstow has responded
by donating food and money, pro
viding a campsite, and reaching
out continually to help us spread
our message.
It is my belief that people want
to live in a world that is safe for
them and their children. It is only
when they lose hope that they are
content to lease everything up to
their leaders. If our walk can do
anything to improve and streng
then this hope, then we will have
been successful.

l have developed great love for
this group of marchers. Despite the
many differences that we hate,
there is a common thread of good
ness and optimism in each of us.
This experience has helped me to

ryone. It is this mysterious force
that we attempt to describe when
we use the term “G-d.” What l am
asking is that you look inside your
self to decide the way you would
like to live, and the sort of world
you would like to live in.
At the time of the Holocaust in
Germany, G-d did not let man
down. Rather man let G-d down
by not listening to Him. Every per
son who ignored what his true sell
was saying, and did not speak out
against the Nazis, let G-d down,
and, ultimately, let himself down.
My personal self is telling me
that the threat of nuclear weapons
held over humanity is inhumane
and unacceptable. My conscience
will not let me sit by and allow
another Holocaust to happen. I he
