Histadrut opens Atlanta office; wins praise for apartheid stand The active role taken by Israel’s labor movement in training South African black leaders in labor or ganizational skills was praised by Herbert H. Mabry, Georgia state president of the AFL-CIO, at the opening in Atlanta last month of a new regional office of the Histad- rut, Israel’s General Federation of labor. Also present at the opening were Issachar Katzir, Israel’s consul general in Atlanta, Yehuda Ebstein, deputy executive vice president of the national committee for Labor lsrael-Histadrut, and representa tives of local and regional organi zations and trade unions. “This new Histadrut program to help black South Africans will have the support of all Americans who oppose South Africa’s racist policies,” said Mabry. Ebstein praised American Labor’s long history of support for Israel through the the Histadrut. He saw the new program as an opportun ity for Americans also to partic- pate in “a positive and constructive way in the search for a non-violent solution to the problems in South Africa. Katzir said that the Histadrut is a force for democracy in Israel and for practical co-existence between Arabs and Jews. Ninety percent of the Jewish and Arab working pop ulation in Israel,” he said, “are members of the Histadrut.” “They participate in a way of life through the Histadrut’s health, ed ucation and social welfare pro grams which have been the basis of Israel’s social system since long before the establishment of the state.” Ebstein introduced newly ap pointed Histadrut regional direc tor Alec Aylat, whose territory includes Georgia, Alabama, Ken tucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Okla homa, Tennessee and Texas. “Americans all over the coun try,” Aylat said, “have been sup portive of Histadrut programs for more than 60 years through the National Committee for Labor Is rael and I expect our friends in the southeast will continue to rein force these programs.” Rabbi Shalom Lewis, president of the Atlanta Rabbinic Associa tion, affixed the traditional mezu- za to the doorpost of the new premises.
