Ahavath Achim to host recital by cellist, pianist
The Cultural Arts Committee of
Ahavath Achim Synagogue will
present a duo recital by Christo
pher Rex, principal cellist of the
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and
Rachel Oliver, pianist, at 3 p.m.
Sunday, April 13. The program
w ill feature works bv Frescobaldi-
Cassado, Schubert, Bartok, Silva
and Rachmaninoff.
Christopher Rex graduated
from Curtis Institute of Music in
1972. He studied for two years with
Leonard RoseattheJulliard School.
He was a member of the Philadel
phia Orchestra for seven years and
has taught extensively at Gettys
burg College and the New School
of Music. In 1979 he won the string
prize of the National Federation of
Music Clubs Young Artists Com
petition, the first cellist ever to win
the award.
Israeli-born pianist Rachel Oli
ver finished her studies at the Jer
usalem Conservatory and Academy
of Music under the supervision of
Alfred Schroeder and received her
Rachel Oliver
B.A. degree with distinction. A
finalist in the first Arthur Rubin
stein Competition in Israel, she
studied, upon Rubinstein’s recom
mendation, at the Royal Conser
vatory in Brussels with Stefan As-
kenase. There she won first prizes
in piano and chamber music, as
Christopher Rex
well as the coveted honorary Laura
van Cutzem prize. In Israel she
coached with Edward Steuermann,
Rudolph Serkin and Claudio Arrau.
