Army’s ‘motor pool’ rabbi
to be honored by RIETS
Chaplain Sachs with Tzipora,
Capt. Nosson M. Sachs may he
the only chaplain in the U.S. Army
who has an office in the motor
pool. He is almost certainly the
only Orthodox rabbi in America
who has to stop a phone conversa
tion w hen the howitzers start mov
ing around outside his window.
Most chaplains have offices far
away from things like motor pools,
but Rabbi Sachs said, "l lelt that, il
I was going to counsel the men. I
should be near them."
Sachs, the Jewish chaplain at
Fort Stewart, Cia.. will he one of
100 recently ordained rabbis who
w ill be honored Sunday. April 6. at
the centennial Chag HaSemikhan
(celebration of ordination) of the
Yeshiva University-affiliated
Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological
Seminary (RlETS).
The rabbi, who was ordained at
RIETS in 1984, has been assigned
to Fort Stewart since November
1984. In June, he is scheduled to
take a new assignment in Frank
furt, Germany.
Some 18.000 soldiers are at Fort
Stewart, near Savannah, and 50 to
60 of those soldiers are Jew s, Sachs
said.
“When a Jew is in a situation like
this, he either loses his yiddishkeit
altogether or he feels a need to be
drawn to his Judaism even more,”
he said. “I want to help those who
feel draw n to their Judaism, as well
as those who feel Judaism has
nothing to offer them.”
I’m really proud of what we have
done here,” the rabbi said. “The
community Passover Seder was
packed and we draw nice crowds
for our monthly community meals.

We also have weekly Shabbat ser
vices and shiurim (Talmudic dis
courses), which are well attended.”
The 30-year-old son of Howard
and Leonore Sachs grew up in
Fairfield, Conn.
He spent three years studying to
be a veterinarian at Iowa State
University. But he wanted to learn
more about his Jewish heritage, he
said. So he came to New York and
attended Yeshiva University.
The university has a special Jew
ish studies division geared for
young men with limited Jewish
backgrounds, the James Striar
School of General Jewish Studies.
"That is a great program,” Sachs
said. “Yeshiva University was the
answer to a need that I had."
While he was an undergraduate
at the university, he was a member
of the student council and a mem
ber of the karate club. He still takes
karate at Fort Stewart.
After graduating from the uni
versity in 19 79, he attended

WOmen. They have two children,
3-year-old Tzipora and 1-year-old
Hanon.
Originally, Sachs said, he planned
to serve in the military only for
a few years, but now he is consider
ing making a career of the army.
"As long as my wife and 1 feel
that our children would not be
adversely affected,” he said, "we
will stay with the military.”
The rabbi is looking forward to
his move to Frankfurt, he said,
even though “1 don't think a Jew
can think of Germany without
thinking of the Holocaust."
But the rabbi has been research
ing the Jewish community in
Frankturt and has found that a
large community of Israelis live in
that city. There are also kosher res
taurants in Frankfurt and a rabbi
who teaches Jewish children.
“Actually, in Germany, 1 will
have more access to an outside
Jewish life than I have here at Fort
Stewart," he said.

At Fort Stewart, the rabbi is also
me chaplain of First Battalion of
the 13th Field Artillery, which has
598 gentiles and two Jews.
“It’s l.ippman and me," the
rabbi said. “And, for a long time,
there was no Hippman."
