The Bat Mitzva of Rachel
Ellen I.ipson of Marietta will
take place at 9:30 a.m. Satur
day, April 19, at Congregation
Etz Chaim. A congregational
kiddush will follow.
Rachel is the daughter of
Robert and Livvy Lipson. Grand
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ben
Lipson of North Miami Beach,
and Mrs. Esther Kazer of Boyn
ton Beach, Fla., and the late
Ben Kazer.
Rabbi David H. Auerbach of Miami,
formerly of Atlanta, has been
named as the national program
chairman for the 86th annual meet
ing of The Rabbin ical Assembly, an
international body representing
1,200 Conservative rabbis, May
18-22 at the Concord Hotel, Kia-
mesha Lake, N.Y.
Rabbi Auerbach founded his
present congregation. Bet Shira, in
Miami.
He is a past president of The
Rabbinical Assembly’s Southwest
region.
The Bar Mitzva of Bryan
Thornton of Atlanta will take
place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday,
April 19. at The Temple. A
congregational kiddush will fol
low.
Bryan is the son of Jill and
Jim Thornton. Grandparents are
Dede and Ben Shapiro of Atlan
ta, and Janet Thornton of Knox
ville.
Dr. Alfred Gottschalk, presi
dent of Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion in New
York, has been re-elected to a two-
year term as chairman of the
North American Advisory Com
mittee of the International Center
for University Teaching of Jewish
Civilization.
The International Center oper
ates under the auspices of the pres
ident of Israel.
Other members of the commit
tee include Dr. Gerson D. Cohen,
chancellor, Jewish Theological
Seminary of America; Dr. Nor
man Lamm, president, Yeshiva Uni
versity; Dr. Irving Rosenbaum, di
rector, Institute for Computers in
Jewish Life; and Dr. Marvin Fox,
director, Philip Lown School of
Near Eastern and Judaic Studies,
Brandeis University. The academic
coordinator of the Committee is
Dr. Jonathan Sarna, associate pro
fessor of American Jewish History
at Hebrew Union College.

Barbara and Israel Vahaba of
Peachtree Corners announce the
birth of a son, Joseph Isaac, on
Jan. 25.
Grandparents are Joan and Mur
ray Rose of Cranford, N.J., and
Fortuna Vahaba of Bat Yam, Is
rael, and the late Joseph Vahaba.
The bris was performed by
Rabbi Leonard Lifshen. The baby
was named in honor of his grand
father, Joseph Vahaba, and great
grandfather, Irving Gimble.

Eva Mindol Shattah has
been included on the Dean’s
List at Sophie Newcomb Col
lege; Tulane University, New
Orleans, for the first semester of
the 1985-1986 academic year.
She has been inducted into the
Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi
Eta Sigma honor societies.
A 1985 graduate of Lakeside
High School, Eva is the daugh
ter of Joseph and Marilyn Shat
tah of Decatur.
Attorney Milton S. Gould and
Samuel W. Lewis, former U.S.
Ambassador to Israel, will receive
the Scopus Award of the American
Friends of the Hebrew University
on April 15 at the Plaza Hotel in
New York City.
Ambassador Lewis served from
1977 until last year as United
States Ambassador to Israel and
was awarded an honorary Ph D. at
the Hebrew University last June.
Gould has been involved with
the APT! U for many years, serving
as national chairman of its legal
division and as chairman of the 4th
International Legal Conference in
Jerusalem this year. A specialist in
corporate litigation. Gould repre
sented Israeli t abinet Minister
Ariel Sharon in his libel suit a-
gainst l ime magazine.

Marilyn Shubin, campaign di
rector of the Atlanta Jewish Fed
eration, gave a paper at the recent
Council of Jewish Federations C am-
paign Directors Institute in New
York. Her topic was “Use of the
Demographic Study for Planning
and Designing Missions.”
Over 60 federation campaign
directors attended the Institute,
