Participants pay attention at Free Trade seminar. Georgia, Israel free trade forum probes several aspects of pact Approximately 100 Georgia businessmen attended the Geor gia, Israel Free Trade Conference last week. The day-long seminar, sponsored by the Atlanta Jewish Federation and Dean Rusk Center for International and Comparative Law, explored the economic and legal ramifications of the U.S./Is rael Free Trade Agreement signed in 1985. “Israel and Georgia share many similar demographic, geographic, economic and market similarities,” said Gil Bachman, chairman of the conference, in his opening remarks. "There is tremendous potential for the development of business rela tionships in many different sectors, including agriculture, computer tech nology, electronic, telecommunica tions and many others. The recent ly approved Free Trade Area legis lation only enhances the market for such trade and investment op portunities.” George Berry, commissioner, Georgia Department of Industry and Trade, and Issachar Katzir, Consul General of Israel, were on hand to open the conference. Panel discussions and luncheon meetings outlined the specifics of the agreement and opportunities which have been opened up in import, export, technology trans fer and investment. As a result of the interest in this conference, the Federation’s Com munity Relations Committee is cur rently exploring the possibility of organizing a trade mission to Israel to foster relations between Georgia and Israeli businessmen. AACI reaffirms anti-racism stance After a dignified debate for 2/: hours, in which 56 people spoke at the closing session of the 25th national convention of the Associ ation of Americans and Canadians in Israel (AACI), on March 18, the delegates voted 112-20 to reaffirm the anti-racism statement passed by the AACI national board sev eral months ago. A key paragraph of the anti-racism statement fol lows: “Like other Israelis, we differ amongst ourselves on issues of politics and religion. However, we profoundly agree on the methods through which those disagreements are expressed and worked out, that is—democracy, with its inherent components of basic freedoms, civil liberties, mutual tolerance and rules of law. We want our fellow Israelis and world Jewry to know that we condemn Meir Kahane’s racist program and activities. As former North Americans, we are familiar with his demagogic me thods, his skillful exploitation of fears and frustrations, and we re ject them with all the moral vigor at our command.” The Convention delegates also called upon the AACI to establish an “Education for Democracy” com mittee, to produce materials in Hebrew and English, for circula tion in the Israeli school system and throughout the informal edu cational network through the coun try. On the first night of the conven tion, Prime Minister Shimon Peres addressed the delegates. He empha sized the important role of North American olim in Israel: "You, my fellow Israelis who have come of your own free will from the United States and Canada, are familiar with democracy as a working sys tem of government. It is an integral part of your upbringing, because you have the experience of demo cracy from your daily lives in your countries of origin. It is your re sponsibility to disseminate the tenets of democracy as you know . //ie ( /> csnstuisu/y (A Congregation Beth Shalom's r <• r '/suuia/ Passover Seder Thurs., Apr. 24 7 p.m. Cong.
