The parted curtains will reveal 13 new needlepoint Torah covers, in colors and background designed to complement the sanctuary's stained glass window's, and each lovingly stitched by a talented Ahavath Aehim member. No project for the centennial celebration has generated more ex citement than the one involving the Torah covers. Both Dave Alter- man and Norman Diamond, co- chairmen of the Centennial Com mittee, attended a recent preview bv the needlework group to bring the congregation’s enthusiasm to the stitchers and to cheer them on. “A hundred years from now these Torah covers still will be used.” predicts Norman Diamond. In fact, he thinks they will become a “must” for visitors to see w hen in Atlanta. Leah Ma/iar is artistic director of what she terms "a unique pro ject” because it is such a large one. Leah took artist P. Kaplan to view the Ahavath Aehim sanctuary and to meet with the Centennial Com mittee and the rabbis. They dis cussed ideas for the Torah covers and finally settled on using the 12 tribes of Israel as a theme. Leah Ma/iar holds Pauline Cohen s finished canv: The artist, who recently moved from California to Florida, sub mitted drawings of her designs. After approval, she painted them on the canvases to be used. Each design has the geometric patterns and colors of t he stained glass win dows as background. Against this are the imaginative symbols of each tribe. A problem arose when it was realized that the congregation needed 1.3 I orah covers, not 12. A little hit of "poetic license” or “artistic free dom” was allowed with the help of the Encyclopedia Judaica. A male Asher design was created and also, a female Asher. Most of the stitchers wanted to do Levi so the only equitable ar rangement was to draw names.
