A.A. centennial to feature
needlepoint Torah covers
by Carolyn Gold
When the Ahavath Aehim con
gregation rises for the ark to be
opened on Rosh Hashana, in this,
the synagogue’s centennial year, a
gasp of admiration is expected.
The parted curtains will reveal 13
new needlepoint Torah covers, in
colors and background designed to
complement the sanctuary's stained
glass window's, and each lovingly
stitched by a talented Ahavath
Aehim member.
No project for the centennial
celebration has generated more ex
citement than the one involving the
Torah covers. Both Dave Alter-
man and Norman Diamond, co-
chairmen of the Centennial Com
mittee, attended a recent preview
bv the needlework group to bring
the congregation’s enthusiasm to
the stitchers and to cheer them on.
“A hundred years from now these
Torah covers still will be used.”
predicts Norman Diamond. In fact,
he thinks they will become a “must”
for visitors to see w hen in Atlanta.
Leah Ma/iar is artistic director
of what she terms "a unique pro
ject” because it is such a large one.
Leah took artist P. Kaplan to view
the Ahavath Aehim sanctuary and
to meet with the Centennial Com
mittee and the rabbis. They dis
cussed ideas for the Torah covers
and finally settled on using the 12
tribes of Israel as a theme.
Leah Ma/iar holds Pauline Cohen s finished canv:
The artist, who recently moved
from California to Florida, sub
mitted drawings of her designs.
After approval, she painted them
on the canvases to be used. Each
design has the geometric patterns
and colors of t he stained glass win
dows as background. Against this
are the imaginative symbols of
each tribe.
A problem arose when it was
realized that the congregation needed
1.3 I orah covers, not 12. A little hit
of "poetic license” or “artistic free
dom” was allowed with the help of
the Encyclopedia Judaica. A male
Asher design was created and also,
a female Asher.
Most of the stitchers wanted to
do Levi so the only equitable ar
rangement was to draw names. A
few swaps were made for signifi-
