A Passover message
by Shoshana S. Cardin
President. Council of Jewish Federations
Passover celebrates the libera
tion of the Jewish people from
their slavery in Egypt. This year we
are overjoyed to be able to cele
brate the liberation of one of our
people, Anatoly Shcharansky, from
his bondage in the Soviet Union.
Finally, for him, the hope expressed
at the end of every Seder, “Next
year in Jerusalem,” has come true.
Many of you joined our steady
stream of protest at the Soviet
Embassy during the CJF General
Assembly last year in November,
on the eve of the Summit Confer
ence in Geneva at which Shcha-
ransky’s release was negotiated.
Avital Shcharansky spoke to us
then, and we were renewed in our
determination to help her and the
cause for which she had become a
symbol.
But we cannot rest on our lau
rels. There are thousands more
who, like Shcharansky, yearn to
leave the Soviet Union for Israel or
other countries where they can live
as Jews in freedom.
Is is our great fortune to live in
freedom in North America. This
year we are being reminded of that
Shoshana Cardin
freedom in a particularly moving
way, as we celebrate the 100th
anniversary of the Statue of Lib
erty—the powerful symbol of free
dom that was the first glimpse of
America for so many of our an
cestors.
But let us not forget those who
are still struggling to attain the
freedom that we sometimes take
for granted. And let us not forget
those who still need our help to
attain the necessities of life, includ
ing food, clothing, housing, educa
tion and health care, through the
funds that we raise and the services
that we provide, both here and
abroad.
In this spring season, a time of
rebirth and renewal, we need to
renew our determination as well
that we will continue to help our
Jewish brothers and sisters who
are oppressed, whether by politics
or by poverty, anywhere in the
world. In so doing, we strengthen
our own Jewish communities, by
ensuring the survival of the Jewish
people.
Nowhere is our need to maintain
Jewish strength and survival more
evident than in Israel. There, in
particular, we must continue to
extend our help and support for
those who need us and work to
ensure that “Next year in Jerusa
lem” will always be a real option
and not a dream.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

The celebration of Passover, the
holiday marking the escape from
slavery to freedom of the Jewish
people some 4,000 years ago, is a
celebration of life and liberty, an
expression of hope and a new
beginning.
The story of Passover—man’s
first successful rebellion against
tyranny—has inspired its readers
through the ages. Time has not
diminished its relevance. What the
ancient Jews achieved then, op
pressed people still seek. The reali
zation that there can be no real life
without freedom is manifested
today in dozens of protests and
uprisings around the globe.
Jews are usually prominent in
support for the cause of the op
pressed of all faiths, because we
have known the bitter taste ol free
dom denied. We know it today as
hundreds of thousands of Soviet
Jews are denied permission to emi
grate, denied the opportunity to
learn Hebrew or study their cul
ture, denied the rights and privi
leges of full Soviet citizenship.
Unhappily, bigots and tyrants
still flourish. Indeed, each passing
day brings news of violence against
peoples whose culture, or color, or
religion sets them apart. Racial
and religious hatreds divert our
attention and sap our strength at a
time when our energy and resour
ces should be pitted against man
kind’s common enemies: famine,
disease, ignorance and poverty.
The Passover story is the glor
ious tale of our people’s liberation.
But it is also a reminder that many
still seek freedom in the contem
porary world. Let those ol us who
are free re-dedicate ourselves to
helping others, still bound in servi
tude, win their freedom. And let
Passover remind us that our own
precious freedom, achieved through
blood and sacrifice, most be
guarded vigilantly, for it is a bea
con to the world.
