Israel Bonds selects Nunn
as honoree of annual event
United States Sen. Sam Nunn
will be the honoree at the annual
Israel Bonds Dinner which will be
held Monday, June 2, at the Hyatt
Regency Atlanta, according to Asher
Benator, general chairman of the
Atlanta Israel Bonds Campaign
Cabinet. Benator praised Dr.
Marvin C. Goldstein, Georgia state
chairman, for his “invaluable assis
tance in coordinating Sen. Nunn’s
acceptance of the honor.”
Nunn was elected to fill the
unexpired term of Sen. Richard B.
Russell in 1972 and quickly estab

as an intelligent, hard working
senator. He is the ranking Demo
crat on the Armed Services Com
mittee and the Permanent Sub
committee on Investigations. He is
also on the Intelligence, Small Bus
iness and Governmental Affairs
Sam Nunn
committees.
Nunn has consistently ranked
among the 10 most effective sena
tors in surveys of journalists and
legislative assistants. In a statewide
survey conducted by the United
Press International in 1983, he was
selected as the most influential
individual in Georgia.
Born in Perry, Ga., Nunn attended
Georgia Tech and later graduated
with honors from Emory Univer
sity School of Law. Prior to his
election to the Senate, he served in
the Georgia House of Representa
tives as a delegate from Houston
County for two terms. His pre
vious Washington experience in
cluded one year of service as legal
counsel to the House Armed Ser
vices Committee before returning
to Perry to practice private law.
He and his wife, the former Col

Toroh thoughts
With a strong hand
Adapted from the uorks of Rabbi Menaehem M
Schnccison. the l.ubavitcher Rebbe. by Rabbi
Vosxi Neu. C'habad ol Georgia
The central theme of the Pass-
over festival is: And you shall tel! it
to your children. The very word
Haggadah( the “Seder book”), mean
ing "to relate” or “to tell,” is con
nected with this same verse,...and
you shall tell it to your children.-
..that with a strong hand the Al
mighty brought us out of Egypt.
We must not be afraid to tell our
children of “the strong hand,” for
in order to achieve an exodus from
any “Egypt”—ancient or modern —
a “strong hand” is necessary. Some
people feel that Torah-Judaism is
too intense for children; a softer,
more diluted approach should be
given. They are surprised when the
diluted approach is rejected by the
majority of our young.
Their mistake is an old one.
Some parents of the previous immi
grant generation had the mistaken
notion, which they transmitted to
their children, that the way to
overcome difficulties of adjust
ment to the new environment was
to quickly assimilate—by discard
ing the heritage of our forefathers
and abandoning the Jewish way of
life. When they found that the pro
cess led to the discomfort of inner
spiritual conflict, there were those
who resolved to spare their child
ren this conflict altogether; they
simply gave their children no Jew
ish education or training!
How wrong they were! The new
generation is not afraid to face a
challenge; not only the kind of
challenge which places one at var
iance with the majority, but even
the kind which calls for sacrifices
and changes in their personal lives.
Our young people are not looking
for softness. They are not looking
for the diluted, the compromised,
the watered-down; they are quite
prepared to accept the real thing —
with all its consequences. This atti
tude is quite different from that
displayed in former times, when it
took a great deal of courage to
challenge prevailing opinions and
ideas; often a person who had the

courage to do so was branded as an
impractical individual, “a dreamer”
etc.
By watering down Judaism we
water down our children’s desire
for it; sweetened red water cannot
replace wine. On this Festival of
our Freedom when we are “...ro tell
our children..." let us have a new
slogan for parents and teachers
regarding transmission of Torah
and Judaism: DON’T DILUTE:
DON’T POLLUTE.
